The Index of Soldiers and Nurses of the Queen in the Second Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902 is a pointer to published sources (mainly online) which usually identify the unit/regiment in which they served - and sometimes much more. Finding the surviving records of Boer War soldiers in the UK National Archives (Kew) can be like looking for a needle in a haystack unless you have some frame of reference to start from.

Hint: If your search fails to find anything relevant try alternative and partial spellings (and mis-spellings) of the surname. Because there are often errors in the source documents being too precise can mean you fail to find people listed in the index. Similarly, being too precise too early filtering with given names, numbers and unit names can also obscure an imperfect record that will appear with a wider search.

The SOTQ index aims to narrow your search for Boer War veterans but do not expect too much from it - at this stage it only covers something over half of the 500,000 Boer War soldiers and nurses on the British side. Moreover, many entries just provide initials rather than given names. Hopefully that could still make your haystack a bit smaller.
