Prisoners Aid ACT aims to support and assist current prisoners, released prisoners and others in the criminal justice system, together with their families and friends, and thereby to promote a reduction in crime.
PA is a voluntary organisation that has been operating independently since 1963. The ACT Government and occasional donations fund our activities.
Our members are experienced people volunteering their time for the welfare of prisoners, released prisoners and their families.
We believe that prisoners and their families are best served when they remain in regular contact with each other. Keeping in touch with family and feeling supported by them is known to reduce the likelihood that prisoners will commit further offences.
To this end, we are working towards:
· A better understanding in the ACT community of the needs of prisoners and their families,
· The establishment of a post-release hostel to help with the transition prom prison to the community, and
· Support of the new ACT prison: the Alexander Maconochie Centre.
