Letters to the Editor

22/12/2002

Sir,

Pre-emptive strike required NOW!

As an honest taxpayer, I was appalled to discover that the former Minister for Workplace Relations, Peter Reith secretly granted indemnity to John Leyton and Lee Carson for costs of $96,000 awarded against them.  Leyton and Carson gave evidence under oath to the Federal Court that Justice Marshall described as "improper", "inconsistent and unacceptable" - "a set of lies" (Sydney Morning Herald 7 December 2002).

When asked why the Government had decided to grant immunity after they had been found by a judge to be liars, the current Minister Tony Abbott was not at all embarrassed.  "People who give evidence on behalf of the Commonwealth should be protected" he said.

The Roman Empire and the USSR were destroyed not by inadequacy of military budget or technology, but by moral decay from within.   Any of our leaders displaying this ethos, constitute a real and present threat to our national security, requiring a pre-emptive strike in accordance with the Prime Minister's recently stated policy. .

Yours faithfully,

Robert James,

Watson.
