Hint: This site is intended as a search aid - not a definitive source. It is essentially an index to documents that seem to relate to this person plus a very brief precis of relevant elements. Sources often conflict and I also flag things with a ? when I am unsure. So if the information below is important to you, then please check the original sources to see what else they contain (and in case I have inadvertantly introduced transcription and/or precising errors). There can be additional information that was not included in the database for both space and copyright reasons.

URL9: Bishop RILEY, Chaplain-General of the forces, [said 1.3.1908] ... They wanted to honour the brave, and those who did their duty, and that morning they were thinking of two soldiers who fought in Africa. One, the late Colonel RICARDO, came home, and was after wards killed by an accident. Colonel RICARDO was a soldier and a gentleman, and nothing higher in his praise could be said than that. He was a man whose life inspired them to do their duty. The other was the late Lieutenant FORREST, of whom it was more difficult to speak, because, as they knew, he was only a boy when he went to fight for his country and met his death on the battlefield. Those who were with him in Africa, his comrades, thought he would have made a splendid officer if he had only lived, but he gave up his life for the sake of his country when only a lad, and he could not have done more.
URL10: DEATH OF COL. RICARD0. A STRIKING CAREER. MELBOURNE. June 4 [1907]. Col. Percy R. RICARDO CB, (Commandant of the Commonwealth Military Forced in the State of Victoria), who was injured while hunting yesterday, died tonight.
GeelongAdv.: Colonel RICARDO, the State Commandant, who was on Monday [3.6.1907] thrown from his horse whilst hunting at Lyndhurst, died at 10' minutes to 10 o'clock last night. Deceased served in the South African war, and was then stationed at Queensland. On his return from South Africa, he brought a libel action against the Brisbane "Observer" and won it. Since the new military arrangements he has occupied the post of commandant of the State military forces.
Perth STimes: COMMANDANT OR CLOWN? RICARDO'S RECORD. WESTRALIA'S WIRE-FENCE WOLSELEY. It is seldom WA has such a dubious honor conferred upon it as when Lieut-Colonel RICARDO CB was sent over from Queensland to succeed Colonel CAMPBELL as military commandant. Some facts about this gentleman should prove of peculiar interest although they would hardly come as news to people in Queensland, who have long since taken this military popinjay's measure. Colonel Percy RICARDO, is we believe, a Canadian by birth. ...
West Australian: Lieut.-Col. RICARDO CB, arrived at Fremantle on Tuesday morning [29.7.1902], and later in the day, took over the command of the forces of this State from Lieut.-Col. CAMPBELL who retires from service on September 1 next.

Please email me if you can contribute any other relevant information about this person (eg any other military service, where in Australia they came from or when/where they died). Also, if you find an external link broken.

Apology: For some time now it has been difficult to keep up with the newly available sources (especially the Trove newspaper site) plus the flow of contributions and queries. So I have been forced to prioritise maintenance and data entry over replying to correspondence. Nevertheless, your contributions are being added to the database and acknowledged on the contributions page and, although my replies are many months behind, I will attempt to get to them more often.
