ufh logo Upgrades from Hell : cardreader!

The software that enables me to transfer data to/from my Digital Camera via USB has 'busted'. I can't make it install again, no matter how hard I try. I think the only way I can fix it is to reinstall Windows 98, and I simply don't want to do that.

SO, I ordered a USB Compactflash card reader from flashmemory.com.au, as well as an 80Mbyte Compactflash card.

I ordered it via their Web page on Sunday, and it arrived on my doorstep at about 7:30 am on Tuesday.

The USB card reader plugged into my USB port, prompted me for software, I put the supplied CD into my machine, loaded up the half-dozen or so drivers, then plonked in a card from my camera and uploaded the pictures to my machine. 50 pictures took 15 seconds or so to transfer, which is heaps faster than the Camera itself was at transferring data. (By comparison, uploaded the 30 or so Jannieq pictures to the website took about 15 minutes).

So that worked like a charm.

I put the 80Mbyte card into my camera, and it dutifully reported that it had capacity for 156 'full size' pictures (1536 * 1024, minimum compression) or 959 'small' pictures (768 * 512, maximum compression), on a single little card.

The compactflash cards are about 1.5mm thick, 30 mm wide and 25 mm in length.

The only downside was when I tried to show Kimberley Heitman how easy it was to use, and Windows 98 explorer insisted that it was going to crash and crash and crash and crash. After a reboot, it behaved itself.

I look forward to being able to take 'a shitload' of pictures in the future, without having to worry about deleting shots that aren't any good.
