Artificial mapping unit in astrography, intended to delineate and define locations within the galaxy.
A sector is equal to 16 subsectors (each measuring eight parsecs by ten parsecs), having an average density of 500 to 650 worlds.
Sectors are named, and several synonyms are in common use, including march (or marches), region, reach (or reaches), quadrant, and matrix. The Spinward Marches is an example of a sector.
As a rough means of comparing size, the sector counts of the large interstellar states and areas of settlement are:
State | Sector Count |
---|---|
Imperium | 27 |
Aslan Hierate | 18 |
Hive Federation | 17 |
Two Thousand Worlds | 14 |
Vargr Extents | 14 |
Zhodani Consulate | 13 |
Solomani Confederation | 11 |
