What is Veterans Athletics?

Fitness, fun and fellowship in athletic pursuits for men and women 30 years and over.

We were established in 1979.

We are affiliated with the Australian Association of Veterans Athletic Clubs We are members of the ACT Athletic Council, a body which includes:
representatives from ACT Athletics, ACT Little Athletics, The ACT Cross Country Club and the ACT Walkers Club.

Through AAVAC we are affiliated with the Oceania Veterans Athletics (OVA) and the World Association of Veterans Athletics


Our Main Competition and Activities

A full track and field program is conducted every Thursday, during the months of October to March, from 7 pm to 10 pm at the AIS Athletic Field, Bruce. Standards vary from beginner to the elite, everyone is welcome to compete at their own level.
Monthly handicaps in running and throwing, the runs at various locations around Canberra and the throws at the Masson street throwing area in Turner.
Annual events include: the Cross Country Carnival, the Fun Run around Lake Ginninderra and the Half Marathon around Lake Burley Griffin.
Competition at local, state, national and world track and field championships.
Standards are in five-year age groups, with performance records kept in all events.
A monthly newsletter which includes a calendar of events, all results and articles of general interest.


Training

Pack runs are held most Sunday mornings when there are no competition runs scheduled.
The pack runs start at 9 am from the Deek Recreation area (the corner of Cotter and Uriarra Roads) in Stromlo Forest. Various distances and abilities are covered.
Throwing sessions are held at the Masson Street throwing area in Turner on Sundays at 10 am.
Jumping sessions (high jump) are conducted at Dickson Oval on Monday evenings at 5.30 pm.
Sprint sessions are at the Bruce TAFE grass track from 10 am on Sunday and also at the Woden Athletic track from 5.30 pm.
Coaching advice is available for all events conducted by the club.

Handicap and other competitoins that encourage and reward improvement
Regular athletics in age groups can result in faster improvement than you thoughtpossible
You will enjoy comparing your times and distances as you improve your own personal bests, or with others in your age group
You will discover that age is no barrier to fitness.


The Social Aspect

At the conclusion of all the events that the club organises, tea, coffee amd milo is provided. As well, nibbles are on offer, - usually biscuits.
During the summer track and field season, it is customary for participants to bring a post-competition supper plate. It is a time to make new friends and compare athletic experiences.
Members often make up groups that travel to the various Fun Runs or athletic meetings that are held in the region.
e.g. The Sydney City to Surf Fun Run, The Great Puffing Billy Train Race, The Rye Park Fun Run, The Canberra Times Fun Run.


Social Activities

Well attended and popular monthly birthday dinners are organised as well as the occasional social function.
