First Visit?

If this is your first visit to Johnny Boy's Walkabout Blog, welcome and here's some information which may assist you in using this resource:

  1. The Home page is an index to the listed Walk Reports. As well, it shows a panorama/theme photo from the latest walk, a Google Earth embed of the latest walk's track and waypoints and a slideshow of the latest photos I've added to Picasa (in reverse order). Click on a walk entry to see track details and photos for the walk; click on KMZ for the Google Earth view of the walk (if you have the Google Earth application installed on your PC); click on Pictures to access Picasa-stored (from walk 442) or my locally-stored photographs of the walk (additional photos are stored on third party sites - mainly Picasa - and are accessible via the walk report).

  2. The green bar near the top and at the bottom of the index contains links to additional and supporting material.

  3. The Coming up: more link shows walks that are on my wish list

  4. Each walk report contains facts, figures, Google Earth embed, photographs and sometimes a YouTube video relevant to the walk. You can either enjoy the walk vicariously or, better still, have a go yourself. But note the Disclaimer, Warning and Advice and Grading. Work up to things!

  5. Photographs are presented as thumbnails or as Picasa-stored slide shows. Click on thumbnails to show a larger picture. If you want to see a still of a photo from a Picasa-stored slideshow, just click on it. From this view, to see the photo in a larger format, you can additionally click the magnifying glass icon and/or toggle in and out of full screen mode by pressing F11 on your keyboard.

To return to the slideshow, close the browser window or tab displaying the still, hover over the paused slideshow and click the forward arrow.

See the Pictures page for more detail.

  6. There are a number of ways to search for information. See the Choose a Walk page (particularly items 6,7 and 8) for more detail.

  7. If you want to know when a new Walk Report is available, subscribe to my RSS feed. See the RSS Feed page for more information.

  8. There are a number of additional presentation techniques that I'm always experimenting with, such as Google Earth embeds, RSS feeds, slideshows, videos on YouTube, stitched photo panoramas, additional photos stored on third party sites (Facebook, box.net, Picasa), clickable map images, sound bites, Google Earth kmz files.

  9. For technophiles, from Nov 09 I am trying to write standard XHTML and CSS code (XHTML 1.0 | CSS 2.1). However, Picasa slideshows and Google Earth embeds do not generate standard XHTML.

  10. I design on a 24" HD (1920*1200pixel 16:9 format) LCD panel, so if you have a smaller resolution or display, the page formatting may look a bit wonky and you'll have to scroll around.

  11. Many people contact me for further information. Email me, as you might have something I'd like.
