More Walks I'd Like To Do

Here's a few more walks that I'd like to do, gleaned from talking with others, poring over maps and trawling the CBC, FBI and Wednesday walks.  Any walk below that has a 2-digit prefix and distance, climb and grading I have plotted a route and waypoints and I'm just itching to do; any walk on the index page with a * is a CBC walk that I'm leading and anyone is able to join as a CBC guest for up to 3 walks (ring me for details); any walk with a ! is a private walk that I've put together and you're welcome to join (ring me for details). So all I need is someone to say "let's go!". Sources - C (= CBC); F (= FBI); Fah (= FBI adhoc); W (= Wednesday walks):

Peter W walk on FBI 15Aug10: We drive to the end of Woolcara Lane (on the way to Captains Flat), and walk uphill on fire trails, creek sides and hill sides, have lunch at Horseshoe Hill with hopefully panoramic views, and go back on a largely clear spur. This is an interesting new walk, with good views in pleasant country. Mostly off-track, but generally good walking surface. Climb: 450m. Map: Captains Flat. Cars: 90km ($11). 12km, 450m M(10)

20 P20 Corner Hill F Sun 1 Jul 07 – Corner Hill, Yanununbeyan Reserve 7 km Easy (7) Leader: John C. This is a walk to see the very dry forest of this area and the Queanbeyan river in tranquil setting. A chance to see the area just upstream from the Googong Foreshores Reserve. We start near Corner Hill on Woolcara Lane, and walk  to Corner Hill, down to the Queanbeyan River, retrace our steps and do an arc through the forest back to the cars. The forest has almost no scrub, and is relatively easy underfoot. Total climb 260 m. Cars: 60 km ($6). Map: Captains Flat. Meet at Q.

P21 Mt Franklin-Fishing Gap Crossover
I've recce-d both ends - this will be very demanding

15.6km, 1200m L/R,X; H(14)

C Saturday 6 April 2002: Namadgi N.P. L/R/W Fishing Gap - Mt Franklin Crossover. A physically demanding walk across the grain of some spectacular but rugged country in the heart of the Cotter catchment. ~17km + climb of ~1200m (uphill party)/ ~600m (downhill party) + Cotter River crossing(s).
Interesting to hear from one of the co-leaders that this walk didn't happen due to lack of other participants. When I get to it, let's make it happen!
'From memory TU and I were going to go down a long spur from  Franklin, heading NE towards the 1380 contour, then the 1230 and 1130 contours. From there head SSE to the hut on SYard creek. (Another hut for you to bag!). From here we were going to make it up - heading ESE (following Cotter River) to Black springs. I think it is a great trip and has not been done in my 11 yrs with CBC.' from BS
and, from TU, 'Re the Franklin-Tidbinbilla crossover, B's recollection of the route we were proposing matches mine, except that I don’t think I was planning to follow the Cotter River all the way from the Stockyard Creek ‘hut’ to Black Springs.  I think my intention was to leave the Cotter at the point where it turns from flowing south to west (south west of the 812m knoll) and head across country from there to Black Springs.  Based on what I knew of the terrain and scrub, I reckoned on taking around 12 hours for the trip.  The ‘hut’ shown near the junction of Stockyard Creek and Cotter River is, I think, an ACTEW stream gauging station.  I don’t know if it survived the 2003 fires or, if it didn’t, whether it has been rebuilt since the fires. For the walk to work, we needed to be able to get one group into Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve before it opened to the public and, potentially, one group out after it closed.  I was working for Environment ACT at the time and was able to arrange this with the then manager. He wasn’t convinced that what we were proposing was feasible and insisted that I produce a fairly detailed risk management plan before he would agree to after-hours access.
22 P22 Matthew H Stockyard Gap area - ski shelter site Postponed a couple of times due to weather and, on 27 MAr 12, the Mt Franklin Rd is still closed. Matthew H said on 2 May 10 he'd take me there. It's a little way down the W side of the gap, just pieces of tin left. See page 38 of Graeme Barrow's Namadgi & Tidbinbilla Classics: Tough Bushwalks in Canberra's High Country: "(...walk westwards through scrub for a short distance at Stockyard Gap to reach what's left of a hut (605645) built in 1948 by a group of Mt Franklin skiers; scraps of bush and sawn timber and metal ridge-capping are all that's left.)".
23 P23 More B&B sites at TNR
24 P24 Nursery Swamp A wander around looking for NA34, 35, 36 and G11. Tony B, Mike B might be interested.
25 P25 Bendora-Johns Peak-Camels Hump-Bendora Talk to Chris L to get ideas. Ridge to Camels Hump or near Johns Peak seen on 3 Apr 07.
C Sunday 1 November 1998 - Johns Peak from Bendora - L/R A demanding walk that offers close up views of some of the wildest and most spectacular terrain in the ACT. We'll follow Burkes Creek upstream for a couple of kilometres from its junction with the Cotter River, climb a long spur to Johns Peak, walk along the ridge of the Tidbinbilla Range to Camels Hump and return to the cars via an equally long spur to the south of the Pierces Creek watershed. Steep climbs, plenty of (not-too-dense) scrub and probably some scree slopes to negotiate. [15kms + 850m climb] Map: Tidbinbilla 1:25,000
26 P26 Namadgi Loop 3 days.

Old amazing walk descriptions, pre-2003 fire and subsequent regrowth:

C 16 - 18 March 1996 (Canberra Day Long Weekend) - High Peaks of Namadgi - M/M-R I won't be going on this trip as originally planned, but have left it in in case anyone who wants to go is willing to lead it (Just call me, I am happy to take bookings). A repeat of a trip that was snowed out last year. From Yaouk Gap walk through the snowgums up Mt Murray and then over to Mt Bimberi, the highest point in the ACT where we shall camp on the summit and admire the view of the peasants down below and to Jagungal in the south. Next day we descend to the Cotter River before climbing to Mt Kelly. We shall camp upon one of the high saddles next to the peak. On the last day, out over Mt Gudgenby and Scabby, exploring the huge granite slabs. Map: ACT 1:100 000 or Yaouk and Rendezvous Creek 1:25 000
C 20-21 April 1996 - Orroral - Yaouk - Morgan, Murray, Bimberi , Orroral Car Swap - M/R - L/E This was a popular trip until the mid-80's when a property changed hands. It changed hands again a couple of years ago. The party starting from Yaouk will climb Morgan and Murray before going to one of my favourite campsites between Bimberi and Murray. After a convivial joint camp they will proceed via Bimberi (ACT's highest), Cotter Hut and Cotter Gap to Orroral. The other party will do the reverse. The L/E version would be to skip all peaks and follow fire trails all the way, just looking at the great scenery. Combinations possible. Maps: Rendezvous Creek & Yaouk 1:25 000
C May 23-24 1998 - Mount Namadgi - M/R Walk from the locked gate in the Orroral Valley through Cotter Gap to a camp site at Little Creamy Flats. Climb Mount Namadgi for great views of the southern ACT peaks. On Sunday return from Little Creamy Flats to Rendezvous Creek, Nursery Swamp, and the Orroral valley. Map: Rendezvous Ck 1:25,000
C 16- 17 September 2000- Mt Namadgi- M/R Orroral car park, Creamy Flats, dry camp on top of Namadgi and return. Map: Rendezvous Creek 1:25,000
C 28-29 Oct 2000 Orroral to Namadgi via Cotter Gap and Creamy Flat M/M (R Optional) From Orroral, proceed via track over Cotter Gap to Pond Creek. The overgrown fire trail to Creamy Flat has reputedly been cleared. We shall see. Camp at Big Creamy Flat, with a side trip up Namadgi to see the great views and the aboriginal rock arrangements. Return either the same way or via the emphatically scrubby direct route to Rendezvous & Nursery Creeks. Park authorities require no fires to be lit and a limit of 6. Maps: Rendezvous Creek/Corin Dam 1:25000
C 10- 12 March 2001- Yankee Hat- Rotten Swamp and return- L/R. An exploratory trip, particularly difficult along Yankee Hat. Map: Rendezvous Creek 1:25,000
C 6-8 April 2002: Namadgi N.P. L / M (days 1 & 3), M / R (day 2) Mt Namadgi & Ridge 1711m. From Orroral gate to a pleasant camp site at Little Creamy Flats via Cotter Gap. Then a full day to explore the entire length of Namadgi, ascending from Little Creamy Flats, with optional return to the campsite via northern ridgeline 1711m & further great views. Return to cars day 3. Maps: Corin Dam and Rendezvous Creek 1:25 000
C 8- 10 June 2002: Namadgi N.P. L / R Boboyan Carpark - Gudgenby - Bogong Gap - Burbidge - Rotten Swamp - Namadgi - Middle Creek - Car park. This is a difficult trip checking out whether it's still as awful as it is said to be. Maps: Yaouk & Rendezvous Creek 1:25 000 **

C 6-7 September 2003- Gudgenby Ridge to Bogong Gap- M/R
This is an exploratory trip with a likely exit via Bogong Gap and Middle Creek. Map:Yaouk, Rendezvous Creek 1:25,000 **
