About the author

The discography has been compiled by Jonathan Brown, author of two Wagner discographies published by Greenwood Press in the United States. Each is a comprehensive discography of Wagner's great music dramas, with a critical introduction to the recordings: Parsifal on Record (1992) and Tristan und Isolde on Record (2000).

The books were the first detailed, scholarly accounts of the recorded heritage of Parsifal and Tristan und Isolde. Tristan und Isolde on Record won the Association for Recorded Sound Collections (ARSC) Award for Best Research in the Field of Recorded Classical Music in 2001. They remain essential reading for record collectors, Wagner enthusiasts, students of vocal art and the history of Wagner in performance.

This Tristan discography, which does not include the critical commentary in the book, was put online in February 2005. It is up-to-date to the end of 2004. Many people helped make it possible, for which the author expresses thanks.

He has also written short pieces Furtwängler on film (2008) and Albert Coates – a Great Wagner Conductor (2005).

He is also the author of Great Wagner Conductors – a listener’s companion (Parrot Press, 2012) which won a 2013 ARSC Award for Excellence in Historical Sound Research. Click on the title to read excerpts from the reviews.
