The descendents of William and Lydia BLAIR who settled in North Eastern Victoria in 1860.

This chart details the members of our family tree, from its beginnings in Yackandandah, Victoria during the goldrush, down to the present and I am indebted to many fellow ‘Blairs’ in compiling it.  We are also very appreciative of Ken Blair allowing us to place it on his website.  Members of my own direct family are highlighted.  Birthdates of any descendents thought to be living have been omitted.  Any suggestions, additions, corrections or requests for further information are welcome and can be forwarded to me, Ian Foster, fosterus46@gmail   Updated 5 January 2011.

First Generation

1.     William BLAIR was born 28 May 1820 in Dalry, Ayrshire, Scotland. He died 2 Jun 1893 in Yackandandah, Victoria, Australia from apoplexy of the brain and was buried 4 Jun 1893 in Yackandandah, Victoria, Australia.

William was a baker. He emigrated about 1845 to Adelaide, SA, then to the Victorian goldfields.

William may have married Lydia (Ann?) HAMBLIN, daughter of Joseph HAMBLIN and Sarah HAMBLIN, in 1853 in Adelaide. Lydia was born 1824 in London England. She died 18 Jan 1865 in Beechworth Gaol (in care) Victoria and was buried in Beechworth Cemetery. 

Two of Lydia’s siblings also migrated to Australia, Eliza, who settled and married in Perth, and Joseph, who, after spending some years in Perth moved to Kyneton, Vic and was Australia’s first piano maker.  A Hamblin piano is held by the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney.  As well as Lydia’s family below there are countless Australian Hamblin descendents.

They had the following children:

                4    M       iii.    Archibald BLAIR was born 1854 in Ballarat, Victoria. He died 1948 in Tallangatta, Victoria, Australia.

Archibald was a road contractor, coach driver in Mitta Mitta, Victoria.

Archibald married Catherine Ellen FENNELL "Kitty" on 1910 in Albury, NSW. Kitty was born 1864 in Yackandandah, Victoria, Australia. She died 1951 in Melbourne, Australia.

Kitty was an innkeeper and local correspondent in Mitta Mitta, Victoria.

+             6    M        v.    Thomas BLAIR was born 1859 and died 1908.

+             7    M       vi.    Andrew BLAIR was born 1861 and died 1935.

William also married Margaret Logan, a childless widow born in 1826 in County Down, Ireland, in 1870 in her home in Yackandandah.  She was a dressmaker and died of bilious fever and was buried in Yackandandah in 1889.  They did  not have children.

 

Second Generation

2.     George BLAIR (William) was born 26 Apr 1849 in The Murray, South Australia. He died 1933 in Collingwood, Victoria and was buried in Melbourne General Cemetery, Wesleyan L266.

George was a miner/hawker in 1892 at Sandy Creek, Victoria. He was a shopkeeper 1905 - 1933 in Hoddle St, Collingwood.

George was not married (1) to Jane SWASBRICK, daughter of John William SWASBRICK and Mary Anne REGAN, who was his partner from about 1870 in Yackandandah, Victoria, Australia. Jane was born 1853 in Plenty River, Melbourne, Australia. She died 1895 in Albury, NSW from post childbirth complications and was buried 1895 in Albury, NSW.

Jane was a housekeeper.

They had the following children:

             12    F          v.    Julia Elizabeth BLAIR was born 2 Nov 1879 in Yackandandah. She died 1879 in Yackandandah.

             13    F         vi.    Emma Hamblin BLAIR was born 12 Oct 1880 in Yackandandah, Victoria, Australia. She died 1967 in Cheltenham, Victoria, Australia and was buried 22 Jun 1967 in Fawkner Cemetery.

Emma went to 1892 school at Eskdale, Vic. She resided 1900 - 1960 in Hoddle St, Collingwood. She managed the family shop 1910 - 1960 in Hoddle St, Collingwood. She resided 1960 - 1967 in the Aged Care Centre, Cheltenham.

             14    M      vii.    George BLAIR was born 1883 in Eskdale, Vic. He died 1901 in Hoddle St, Collingwood and was buried in Melbourne Gen Cemetery, Wesleyan L266.

             15    F       viii.    Julia BLAIR was born 1885 in Wodonga. She died 1888.

             16    F         ix.    Elizabeth Clarissa BLAIR "Teresa" was born 1890 in Wodonga. She died 24 Feb 1911 in Collingwood, Victoria and was buried in Melbourne Gen Cemetery Wesleyan L266.

+           17    M        x.    Nelson Archibald Gordon BLAIR “Arch” was born 11 Jun 1892 and died 21 Mar 1982.

+           18    F         xi.    Jane BLAIR (RAPSEY) was born 1895 and died 1974.

George married (2) Elizabeth Christina PRITCHARD, daughter of Thomas Dunbar HARRIS and Elizabeth MILLER, on 1903. Elizabeth was born 1847 in Pembroke, Wales, UK. She died 13 Jan 1916 in Northcote, Victoria.

3.     William BLAIR (William) was born 2 Jun 1851 in Adelaide, SA. He died 1947 in Corryong, Vic.

William was a blacksmith in Yackandandah. He was a blacksmith and later grazier in Cudgewa.

William married Elizabeth Maud FENNELL, daughter of John Garde FENNELL and Margaret RIORDAN, on 27 Dec 1875 in Tangamballanga. Elizabeth was born 1853 in Melbourne, Australia. She died 1940 in Corryong, Vic.  Elizabeth was a schoolteacher in Yackandandah and Cudgewa.

They had the following children:

+           24    M       vi.    Richard Garde BLAIR was born 8 Feb 1890 and died 8 Dec 1978.

+           25    M      vii.    Douglas Granville BLAIR was born 14 May 1893 and died 7 Dec 1976.

5.     James Robert BLAIR "Jim" (William) was born 1856 in Sandhurst (now Bendigo) Victoria. He died 1939 in Fitzroy (St Vincents Private), Victoria and was buried 1939 in Fawkner, Melbourne, Australia.  Jim was a Hotel keeper in Omeo, Albury, etc.

Jim married Elizabeth Thompson HADDEN on 1892 in Omeo. Elizabeth was horse trainer but died bedridden in 1932 at Fitzroy.

They had the following children:

+           31    F         vi.    Maude Sybel BLAIR was born 1902 and died 1978.

6.     Thomas BLAIR (William) was born 1859 in Castlemaine, Victoria, Australia. He was a miner and died 1908 of kidney tumour and asthenia in Beechworth, Victoria and was buried in Yackandandah, Anglican.

Thomas married Sarah Jane BURKE, daughter of James BURKE and Elizabeth MCMAHON, on 1888 in Beechworth, Victoria. Sarah was born 1863 in Twist Ck, Vic. She died 1933 in Beechworth Hospital, Victoria.

They had the following children:

7.     Andrew BLAIR (William) was born 1861 in Yackandandah, Victoria, Australia. He died 1935 in Yackandandah, Victoria, Australia and was buried in Yackandandah, Victoria.

Andrew was miner and draper in Twist Ck, Yackandandah.

Andrew married Annie GARVEY, daughter of Patrick GARVEY and Bridget, on 21 Jul 1888 in Yackandandah. Annie was born 1865 in Collingwood, Victoria. She was a hat seller in Yackandandah and died 1939 in Elsternwick, Victoria, Australia.

They had the following children:

Third Generation

8.     John Charles BLAIR (MORRISON) "Charlie" (George, William) was born 9 May 1869 in Yackandandah, Victoria, Australia. He died 28 Aug 1950 in St V Hosp, Fitzroy, Victoria, Australia and was buried in Rem Garden, Fawkner Crematorium.

Charles was a miner, labourer, greengrocer. He resided 1895 - 1900 in Walhalla, Vic, 1900 - 1907 in Bairnsdale, then in East Preston, Victoria, Australia. He resided 1940 - 1950 in Hoddle St, Collingwood.

Charles married Annie PETERS, daughter of John PETERS and Jane PETERS, on 11 Jul 1900 in Wesleyan Church, Bairnsdale, Vic. Annie was born 1875 in Merino, SW Victoria. She died Oct 1940 in Preston, Victoria and was buried 25 Oct 1940 in Preston.

They had the following children:

10.  Annie BLAIR (George, William) was born 1872 in Rutherglen, Victoria. She died 25 Sep 1952 in East Malvern and was buried 26 Sep 1952 in Springvale.

Annie married John GRAY, son of George GRAY and Eliza HURST, on 12 Feb 1894 in Tallangatta, Victoria, Australia. John was born 1865 in Pottesbury, Northampton, England and married Annie on 12 Feb 1894 in Tallangatta, Victoria . He died 18 Apr 1914 in Rutherglen and was buried in Rutherglen.

They had the following children:

17.  Nelson Archibald Gordon BLAIR (George, William)  “Arch” was born 11 Jun 1892 in Hovell Street, Wodonga, Victoria. Arch was a cabinet maker 1914 - 1960 in Melbourne, Australia. He resided 1920 - 1972 in 349 St George's Rd, Thornbury   He died 21 Mar 1982 in Kew, Victoria and was buried in Templestowe.

.Nelson married Edith Rosetta SHARP "Eadie", daughter of Henry Grenville SHARP and Ellen RYAN, on 26 Sep 1914 in Collingwood, Victoria. Eadie was born 12 May 1892 in Longwood, Victoria. She died 15 Sep 1974 in Kew, Victoria and was buried in Templestowe.

Edie was a dressmaker/seamstress and they had the following children:

+           45    F           i.    Elva Clarissa BLAIR was born 11 Jan 1917 and died 6 Jul 2005.

18.  Jane BLAIR (RAPSEY) "Janey" (George, William) was born 1895 in Wodonga. She died 1974 in Tallangatta, Victoria from a cerebral thrombosis and was buried in Tallangatta, Anglican.

Janey was adopted 1895 by the Rapsey family in Tallangatta, Victoria. She resided 1895 - 1927 at Cascade, Tallangatta.

Janey married David FOSTER, son of Joseph FOSTER and Rachel KELTY, on 1927 in Tallangatta, Victoria. David was born 1897 in Broxburn, Scotland. He died 1980 in Albury Base Hosp, NSW and was buried in Tallangatta, Anglican.

David was a farmer in Tallangatta Valley. He resided 1933 - 1980 in "Waverley", Tallangatta Valley.

They had the following children:

19.  William Hamblin BLAIR (William, William) was born 1877 in Yackandandah, Victoria, Australia. She died 1955.

William married Jessie MCKENZIE. Jessie died 1982 in Corryong, Vic.

20.  Archibald Allen BLAIR (William, William) was born 4 Feb 1878 in Yackandandah. Archibald was manager of Cudgewa Butter factory in Corryong, Vic He died 20 Jun 1970 in Brighton, Victoria, Australia and was buried in Cudgewa.  Archibald married Fanny THOMAS. Fanny was born 18 Dec 1885. She died 13 Jan 1959 and was buried in Cudgewa.

They had the following children:

21.  John Fennell BLAIR (William, William) was born 10 May 1879 in Yackandandah. He died 21 Sep 1950 and was buried in Cudgewa.

John married Mary Sophia THOMAS on 1913. Mary was born 29 Jun 1887. She died 2 Dec 1940.

They had the following children:

23.  James Reginald BLAIR "Toby" (William, William) was born 20 Feb 1884 in Cudgewa. He died 3 Aug 1950 and was buried in Tallangatta, Victoria.  He resided at Telford Station, Tallangatta.

Toby married Julia May RAPSEY "May" on 1918. May was born 1890 in Albury.  She died 26 Oct 1975 at Telford, Tallangatta.

They had the following children:

24.  Richard Garde BLAIR (William, William) was born 8 Feb 1890. He died 8 Dec 1978.

Richard married Eva Jean Orr LENNOX "Jean" on 15 Feb 1915. Jean was born 28 Oct 1891. She died 6 Jan 1959.

They had the following children:

+           59    M        ii.    Douglass Lennox BLAIR was born 26 May 1918 and died 24 May 1983.

             60    F         iii.    Lorna BLAIR was born 1925 and died 7 May 2007 at Malvern, Vic.  She lived in Brighton and was a triple certificated nurse, specializing in infant care and became a well-regarded nurse educator.  She worked in several parts of Australia and in the UK.  She was unmarried.

25.  Douglas Granville BLAIR (William, William) was born 14 May 1893 in Cudgewa. He died 7 Dec 1976 in St Kilda, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

Douglas married Isabelle Norma MACNAMARA "Billy", daughter of Patrick Joseph MACNAMARA and MACNAMARA, on 19 Apr 1926. Billy was born 3 Jan 1895. She died 15 Mar 1989.

They had the following children:

             61    F           i.    Katherine BLAIR was born in Benalla, Vic.

26.  James Robert BLAIR (James Robert, William) was born 1891 in Omeo, Vic. He was a traveler when he died of a heart attack while suffering gastric influenza in 1937 in Healesville.

James married Kathleen Frances Mercy HONEYBONE "Mercy", daughter of Charles, caterer, and June HONEYBONE.  She had migrated to Australia in 1913.  Mercy was born in 1905 at Croydon, Surrey UK and was living in Moorabin when she died in 1973.  James and Mercy are buried together at Healesville.

They had the following children:

27.  Olivia Agnes BLAIR (James Robert, William) was born 1893 in Omeo, Vic. She was living at bentleigh when she died at Caulfield in 1967.  Her remains were placed at Springvale.

Olivia married Earnest JOHNSON on 1922 in Albury, NSW.  He died after 1967.

They had the following children:

+           66    M        ii.    Gordon Hadden JOHNSON

29.  Gladys Carlisle BLAIR (James Robert, William) was born 1897. She died 1985 in Dromana.

She had no children and was living at a nursing home in Dromana when she died after a head injury in 1984 and was cremated at Springvale.

30.  Lydia Campbell BLAIR (James Robert, William) was born 1899. She died at Mornington in 1992.

Lydia married Frank PAINE and they lived at Rye, Victoria

They had the following children:

             69    F          ii.    Patricia PAINE was born 1940. She died 2002.

31.  Maude Sybil BLAIR (James Robert, William) was born 1902 in Glen Wills. She died in 1978 in East Doncaster and is buried at Rye, (Presbyterian section).

Maude married Herbert John MUMFORD.at Kew in 1934.   They lived at Waitche, Oxley and Rye.  Herbert died in 1975 in Doncaster East.

They had the following children:

32.  William James BLAIR (Thomas, William) was born 31 Oct 1890 in Yackandandah, Victoria, Australia. He died 1962 in Tallangatta, Victoria, Australia.

William married Margaret BOSS on 1942 in Tallangatta, Victoria. The marriage ended in divorce. Margaret died in Chilten, Victoria.

They had the following children:

             71    F           i.    Margaret Edna BLAIR was born 1935 in Tallangatta, Victoria.

33.  Lydia Maud BLAIR (Andrew, William) was born 16 Aug 1890 in Yackandandah, Victoria, Australia. She died 1951 in Melbourne, Australia.

Lydia was not married (1) to UNKNOWN.

They had the following children:

+           72    M         i.    Edward Kenneth BLAIR was born 2 Nov 1914 and died 24 Sep 1976.

Lydia married (2) Bernard LAFFY, son of Matthew Patrick LAFFY and Johanna SHEEHAN, on 31 Jan 1917. The marriage ended in divorce. Bernard was born 1888.

They had no children:

Lydia was also not married (3) to Alpheus Victor BALL, son of Alfred BALL and Lydia WARDLE, on 1934. Alpheus was born 1890. He died 1970.

They had no children.

34.  Jessica Jean BLAIR (Andrew, William) was born 17 Nov 1894 in Long Swamp, Yackandandah, Vic. She died 5 Oct 1976 in Melbourne, Australia.

Jessica married Archibald Thomas ROBERTSON in 1923 in Melbourne and they lived in Bentleigh.. Archibald was born 1890. He died 1975 in Bentleigh, Vic.

They had the following children:

+           76    M        ii.    Earnest Blair ROBERTSON.

35.  William David BLAIR (Andrew, William) was born 28 Apr 1896 in Osborne's Flat, Yackandandah. He died 1977 in Heidelberg  VIC.

William married Dorothy Ethel HIGGINS on 1925 in Bendigo, Victoria. Dorothy was born 1905. She died 1979 in Footscray, Victoria.

They had the following children:

Dorothy married William Francis JOHNSON on 1929 in Yackandandah, Victoria.

They had the following children:

Kevin had a  milk bar/greengrocers at Middle Park.

Fourth Generation

37.  Neva BLAIR (John Charles BLAIR (MORRISON), George, William) was born 1898 in Whalhalla, Vic. She died pre 1983 in Queensland, Australia.

She had the following children:

38.  George BLAIR (John Charles BLAIR (MORRISON), George, William) was born 1901 in Bairnsdale. George was a horse breaker and later brick carter.  He died 1965 in Melb Vic and was buried 7 Jun 1965 in Preston, Victoria.

George married Ivy Myrtle BROWN on 1928 in Fitzroy. Ivy was born 1910 in Melb. She died 8 Apr 1939 in Womens' Hospital, Melb and was buried 11 Apr 1939 in Preston, Victoria.

They had the following children:

Loris married Sarah COTTERILL on 1932 in Thornbury, Victoria. Sarah died Pre 1984.

40.  Gladstone Archibald BLAIR (John Charles BLAIR (MORRISON), George, William) was born 1908 in Carlton, Victoria, Australia. He died 21 Jan 1963 in St Vincents Hospital, Melbourne and was buried 24 Jan 1963 in Fawkner Crematorium, Melbourne, Australia.

Gladstone was a labourer. He resided in Waterdale Rd, Ivanhoe.

Gladstone married Dorothy Emma STRATTON on 1932 in Carlton, Vic. Dorothy was born 1908. She died Oct 1949 and was buried 19 Oct 1949 at Preston.

41.  George Gladstone GRAY (Annie BLAIR, George, William) was born 1894 in Rutherglen, Victoria. He died 1949 in Melbourne, Australia.

George married Margaret MCGLASHEN on 1930 in St Arnaud, Victoria.

They had the following children:

42.  Charles Loris Hurst GRAY (Annie BLAIR, George, William) was born 1896 in Rutherglen, Victoria. He died 17 Jan 1954 in Parkville, Melbourne.

Charles married Edith BENNETT in 1920.  Edith died 6 Sept 1964

They had the following children:

           100    F          ii.    Lorna Elaine GRAY was born 1925.

43.  Cynthia Lucretia GRAY (Annie BLAIR, George, William) was born 10 Aug 1897 in Rutherglen, Victoria. She died 16 Nov 1972 in Parkdale, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
