Blair Genealogy In Australia

G’day and welcome, to this meeting place for Blair ‘Bairns’. The site has been created to assist in the gathering and sharing of information on the Blair family in Australia. As one commences to reach the three score and ten age syndrome, this ‘bairn’ tends to become interested in things past. Whilst not a bad thing particularly, as many of the lessons for the future come from the experiences of the past, my own personal interest in tracing family history is on the increase.

My particular interest is in the John Blair - Ann McLelland line detail is as follows:

JOHN BLAIR (1816-1858)  AND ANN McCLELLAND (1804-1844)

John Blair was born, married and all his 6 children were born in Cookstown, County Tyrone Ireland.
The Blairs, comprising of John Blair, carpenter, and his wife Ann (nee Ann McClelland), housekeeper, both of whom according to the passenger list descriptions, "could read and write", and each "carrying a Bible", and "having part paid their passages" with a contribution of 5 pound per person, sailed from Plymouth on 27th  December 1849.
They arrived on board the ship Aurora at Port Melbourne on March 31st, 1850. John Blair's religion was Episcopalian. He was aged thirty-three  years and hailed from Cookstown, Tipperary, Ireland. His wife Ann was aged forty-five and came from the same town. John and Ann had with them their children, John, aged sixteen years, Sara Ann aged twelve years, James aged ten, Thomas, aged seven, and Matilda aged four. Listed among the female passengers was their daughter, Eliza Jane, whom it stated, had never been in service, and was aged fourteen years. The eldest son, John, was listed as farm boy.
Nothing is heard of the Blairs until their name appears in a residents directory. Ann Blair and her son James, owned and ran a hotel, the "Carter's Arms", at the corner of Cecil and Nicholson Streets, North Melbourne in the years 1871 to 1875.
John and Ann Blair are buried in the Presbyterian section of the Melbourne General Cemetery – 

To day, through the concentrated efforts of a group of people,  we have been able to identify 413 persons and 136 marriages as descendants of John and Ann Blair.  For detailed information click here.
