Bethsaida. A whiff of home in the Galilee landscape.

and time to contemplate as a group. Here we were the only ones. We listened to the scriptures.
This excavation is relatively new. It surprised archaeologists until they realised that Bethsaida was on an inlet to the Sea of Galilee and the town was therefore quite a distance from the shoreline.

St Francis is also there. (Franciscans won the right to look after the sites of The Terra Sancte in medieval times.)

On Yom Kippur there is a constant procession of walkers through the Jaffa Gate going to the Wailing Wall. No transport is allowed. Children can safely go wild on their bikes on the roads!

In the Armenian Quarter there is a grave of the saintly Lord Abraham of blessed memory, Bishop of Jerusalem, Patriarch of the Holy See, who died in 1192 in the reign of Sultan Salah El-Din. (Saladin)

The Holy Sepulchre is a special place. On my last morning in Jerusalem I did not get up in time to go to an early morning service, but I was there around 8am. It was very quiet and peaceful. A strange experience in a place usually brimming with pilgrims, excited theological students and competing liturgies!
