Political Photos of trip to Jordan and Palestine/Israel September 2009

Tourist photos from this trip.
Some pilgrimage to follow.

We ate very well one night at the Palestinian Women's Cooperative in Freres Road just up from the Knight's Palace Hotel. A very special meal.

Dinner at Palestinian co-op

East Jerusalem was conquered during the 1967 war from Jordan. International agreements recognise it as Palestinian land (West Bank); but Israel sees it as Israeli. Here is the new metro or tramway being built right alongside the wall of the old city (in East Jerusalem). The old city is being strangled. (perhaps) I don't know how cars will get into New Gate once this is operating. Already the roadworks connected with it has changed the roads in front of Damascus Gate. Mr Da'an no longer sells papers across the road; Palestinian buses no longer crowd that road outside of the Garden Tomb. We had known that area well twelve years ago. It has changed.

It might even bring benefits to Arab residents of East Jerusalem: http://www.entrepreneur.com/tradejournals/article/162918760.html

Al Aqsa Mosque. Again I was unable to enter. This time though it was that Israeli authorities had closed the area in the days leading up to Yom Kippur. People who had been in the mosque before the closure stayed on retreat to protect it. This would need to be destroyed if the Temple is to be built again! (As some people desire.)

Checkpoint

Checkpoint. On looking at this photo I noticed that the gun was pointing directly at us. The soldier on the small turret was looking around him, but this time seems to be staring right at the camera. I didn't start to think about what was happening until we were leaving Israel on the Allenby Bridge crossing. But that's another story!

We went to the Palestinian Authority and met with President Abbas' Chief of Staff.

Notice that APRIL 24th is the date for the Memorial Day for the Armenian Genocide.
in WIkipedia:
"On the night of April 24, 1915, the Ottoman government rounded-up and imprisoned an estimated 250 Armenian intellectuals and community leaders.[42] This date coincided with Allied troop landings at Gallipoli after unsuccessful Allied naval attempts to break through the Dardanelles to Constantinople in February and March 1915."

I have the text of the poster and will put it on my blog. http://anchell.blogspot.com

A very special new memorial to that Genocide in the Armenian Theological College.
