Attempting to act as a voice for voiceless nonhumans and to chuck in the odd rant on republicanism and other less serious matters.

Latest:

  • A Plea to Vegetarians
The promotion of (lacto-ovo-)vegetarianism is, in effect, telling the world that it is wrong to kill nonhuman animals for their flesh yet it is okay to breed, imprison and mutilate them for milk or eggs – and then kill them.
  • Sexual abuse of nonhuman animals
There’s been a kerfuffle here in Canberra over the last few days after a photo of a Canberra Raiders (rugby league) player Joel Monaghan simulating sexual contact with a dog was published on the web.

Coincidentally, this piece written by Jenny Moxham was published in the Geelong Advertiser today.
  • Another horse dies
Friday’s Canberra Times reported that the horse Sampler ‘broke down’ at Canberra racecourse on Thursday August 12. It stated that the jockey had sprained his knee – didn’t even go to hospital – but gave no information on the condition of the horse. Nor was there any news online for the next few days.

  • No - I'm not an 'animal lover'
We who argue for the rights of nonhuman animals should never use the term ‘animal lover’ to describe ourselves and should strongly reject the term if it is ever used to describe us.

  • New ACT regulations on battery hens are trivial
Those of us concerned about the treatment of caged hens have always argued against the appalling battery cages on the basis that they prevent the hens from expressing the vast majority of their natural, instinctive behaviours. Absolutely nothing in the ACT Government's new regulations will alleviate a single one of those restrictions.

  • Canberra Times and Dr Bryan Pratt
Canberra Times fishing 'guru' Bryan Pratt claimed that the full weight of scientific opinion indicates that fish do not feel pain. That statement cannot be substantiated. He is either deliberately lying or is deluding himself.

MeG’day

It’s nice to see you here (yep – that’s my beady little eye looking through your webcam ;-)

I’m a maturing (finally) Aussie who’s now retired from paid employment (carefully timed to mesh with the stock market slide - maybe I’ll be working again soon).

Veganism

My main passion these days is trying to move the world’s population (or at least most of them) away from their animal based diet. Global warming is just the latest in a long list of reasons why we should all be moving toward a plant-based diet. See more on my Veganism pages.

Genealogy

I’ve had a web presence for many years and have ‘met’ many new cousins simply by having my minimal genealogical info online. Please have a look – if you’re related send me an email. I’m more than happy to share what info I have, add what I can from you and be corrected where I’m wrong. See my Genealogy pages for information about my father's family (O'Shaughnessy) and my mother's (Browne).

Republicanism

I’m also a passionate republican. The monarchy is an anachronism even in its home (the UK) but is even more so here. The issue will come to the fore again very soon - in the meantime my old ‘Republic Oz’ pages are here.

The Saints

Each Autumn I get filled with optimism regarding the fortunes of the St Kilda AFL club during the upcoming football season. Nearly every August (or even earlier) I’m back to Earth – that’s the nature of the Saints.

Birds

Something I get great pleasure from is observing the local birds. Some of my pics and stories are on my Bird Watching page.

About Me

Also – a little about me in case you think you may have had the dubious pleasure of going to school with me or working with me in various offices around the country.
