AFUW-ACT
Inc. Meeting Report
Topic: RESEARCH INTO LAND ISSUES IN THE PACIFIC
Speaker: Rebecca Monson
Rebecca Monson, winner of the 2007 Georgina Sweet Fellowship, spoke
to us at our February luncheon about her
coming research into women and the right to own land in the Pacific.
She chose this subject as in her student days she
had an interest in the environment and in aid. She had studied Law in
developing countries with a focus on African
contexts and Indonesian Law when in Leydon. Knowing nothing about the
region closest to us - the South Pacific- she
decided to focus on land through a gender issue- women’s rights
in the law of the Solomons. Learning from Africa,
Law reform must go hand in hand with general improvements in women’s
social, educational and economic status.
