EMPLOYMENT DETAILS
- 13 Nov 2006 - 11 May 2007
- Medicare Australia - EFT Project, Testing Team; plus other assorted IT teams
- During my time working on this contract my tasks were spread over various projects ranging from the testing of new
and modified operator enquiry screens, modifying COBOL programs and converting the input and output formats used by programs
to store digital data
1998 - 2006 Self-employed IT Contract Consultant
- Company established November 1998 (Paul Myers Consulting P/L)
- Department of Defence - Pay Systems Maintenance (1998 - 2000)
- During this period I undertook several functions as a contract COBOL programmer/analyst.
These includedbalancing the fortnightly 'Pay Compute' pay run for service personnel as well as
validating the ComSuper data for forwarding to ComSuper on tape cartridges. I was also required
to update the relevant service pay system databases, action various maintenance and enhancement
requests from our client area and on onea few occasions develop a new COBOL program to extract
data from our mainframe database and transfer it to the PMKEYS team so that they could update
their database. For QA reasons, all tasks were documentated using unique task numbers.
1984 - 1998 Department of Defence - Sydney and Canberra
- Information Management Services Branch
- Information System Services Directorate
- Batch Support Team - CENCAT
- Monitored daily production runs of a suite of computer programs
- Coordinated the allocation of tasks (requests and problems) received from our client located in Melbourne
- Trained an ITO1 to do my duties
- CENCAT Rehost Team
- Assisted in the later phases of the conversion of a suite of computer programs between two operating
platforms (Unisys to IBM) and then implement the system on the IBM platform by running the weekly, monthly,
quarterly, annual & ad hoc reports. When the system had been "bedded-in" on the new platform, daily management
was then handed over to the production support team.
- CENCAT Data File 'Clean-up'
- Here I was required to develop a suite of IBM COBOL/DB2 programs to remove extraneous and out-of-date data
from the central database based on information supplied by our client who "owned" the database.
- Residual UNISYS (RAAF) and Problem Resolution Team
- I had to identify programs and other files (incl. data) which were still required for the running a RAAF
subsystem, those which could be archived and those which could be deleted in order to move these to the a
different "partition" on the Department's Unisys 2200 mainframe as the bulk of the Defence supply system had
been migrated to the IBM platform. The engineers then removed the software (logical) partition so that supply
and manpower could both use the "same" physical machine. There were various subtasks required during this project.
- User Requirement Request (URR) Team
- A URR could be raised by a "user" area for the development of a new program, enhancement to an existing program
or maintenance (fixing a problem). When required, programs were documented prior to the commencement of any coding
work that may have been required.
- Testing Team
- This was a co-ordination role receiving messages via the Endevor/Solve system and then allocating the task to the
most suitable area within the section. Some tasks, such as some database fixes, were performed by members of this team.
- SSRP Adhoc Requests
- This role involved the adapting of RAAF Unisys reports so that they could be produced in the IBM environment.
These tasks made use of Mincom's RDL code generator to develop or maintain MIMS COBOL programs.
- Logistics Computer Centre
- RAAF Online Update Team
- As a part of a small team, I developed COBOL screen programs which enabled our client users to directly input
stock supply data into transactions which could then be applied to the database in a daily batch run each night
- CENCAT/SUPDAT Link Team
- Developed screen programs which allowed Army personnel to input data into the Central catalogue using the same
methodology as that used by the RAAF Online Update Team later on.
- CENCAT Team
- On my move from Sydney to Canberra (see below) I undertook an extensive 6 month training program working as a
member of the CENCAT Team, whilst also attending classroom training when required. The training involved
familiarisation with UNISYS COBOL and UNISYS DMS1100 (ie database) programming as well as the use of ECL - the
UNISYS 'equivalent' to IBM's JCL. The CENCAT team maintained the Defence central (or master) catalogue (database)
of over 1.6 million items for the Army, Navy & Airforce
- Regional Finance Office
- Ledgers Clerk
- I commenced my employment in the Defence Department in Jan 1984 as a CLAD1 in the Sydney Regional Finance Office
(RFO) handling finance documents ranging from Transfer Advice Notices (TANs) when service personnel were posted or
transferred from one base or establishment to another, to the various types of funding schedules and scrutinising of
"claims for payment" against available funds for units.
A summary of all employment positions held since 1973 is also
attached for your additional information.

MEDICAL DECLARATION
(NB: See Abbreviations where necessary to explain any abbreviations used in this section.)
As of Thu, 05 Jan 2012 I have been on a Disability Support Pension (DSP) having, previous to that, been on Newstart Allowance,
on and off, since late 2000. Under the DSP I am able to do voluntary work or voluntarily undertake part-time work for up to
12 hours per week.
My disability concerns my vision. I have been legally blind in my right eye since November 2008 when my ophthalmologist did an
ultrasound on that eye after detecting an unexplanable drop in ocular pressure since the previous checkup. The ultrasound identified
an inoperable detached retina in the right eye. I also have an apparently rare form of cataract on the right eye which it has been
decided not to treat as it would do nothing for my vision in that eye due to the condition of the retina. I have been advised that the
cataract on the right eye appears the way it does in the photos of it that I have due to the trauma of the retinal detachment.
Whilst the corrected distance vision, in my left eye, is fine my near vision is becoming more and more problematic, requiring
additional magnification to aid general reading as well as computer use, neither of which can be sustained for long periods of
time without the need for a break. There is also a cataract currently forming on this eye. I have, for some time now, had
diplopia (double vision) in my good (left) eye but was
only advised of the reason for this at my regular ophthalmic checkup of Mon, 01 Aug 2011. I am actually seeing one genuine image and
two "ghost" images, rather than the one genuine and one ghost image as suggested by the classical definition. (Also see the
Wikipedia page for diplopia.).
My condition is probably more correctly defined as follows:
triplopia [trip·lo·pi·a)
noun Ophthalmology
Condition in which a subject sees three images of a single object. This condition may be the result of
crystalline lens sclerosis, multiple pupils, etc.
[Millodot: Dictionary of Optometry and Visual Science, 7th edition. © 2009 Butterworth-Heinemann]
or probably even polyopia
