ANDALUSIA - Moorish Spain
Notes: The name is derived from Vandalusia, the southern half of Spain into which the Vandals were driven ca 419/20 by WALLIA of the Visigoths.
In 711 MÛSA ibn NUSAIR, the Arab governor of the Mahgreb (the West) sent his freedman Tarik ibn Ziyad es-Sadfi on an exploratory raid to Al-Andaluz, the Moor name for southern Spain. He landed at Gibraltar and nearby beat in battle the last Visigoth King, Roderigo. MÛSA then joined Tarik and they took the Visigoth capital Toledo. The ruling Arab and much more numerous Berber Moors settled only as far north as olives would grow; and the Arabs took the best districts, divided by a bitter feud between the Qais and the Kalb, while the Berbers got the lesser districts.
MÛSA was recalled to Damascus by Caliph HISHAM and followed by his (MUSA’s) son ABD-al-AZIZ, Hurr who crossed the Pyrenees in 717/18, Samh who captured Narbonne in 720, and the Emir Abd-ar-Rahman who was defeated at Tours or Poitiers by CHARLES MARTEL and Duke EUDO of Aquitaine in 732.
