RICHARD de CLARE “Strongbow” (a play on one of his titles, Lord of Striguil), 2nd Earl of Pembroke, d 1176 and part of his original tomb effigy is in Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin which he developed with St. Lawrence O’Toole. RICHARD m (AOIFE) EVA, dau of DERMOT MacMURROUGH, King of Leinster (see under MacMurrough for ancestors). When DERMOT was exiled and seeking help in Wales Strongbow had bargained his help in return for marriage with AOIFE.
Strongbow became Lord of Leinster and Constable of Ireland, and on DERMOT ’s death in May 1171 actually succeeded DERMOT as King of Leinster
His only son, aged 17, ran away from a battle with the Irish, but when he returned to congratulate his father after the battle was won his father is said to have cut him off in the
middle with his sword.
