MacCARTHY - Kings of Munster, Princes of Desmond, Earls of Clarence
The MacCarthys are said to be descended from Oilioll Olum, 3rd century King of Munster, who had 2 sons, Eoghan and Cormac Cas. At his death Cormac Cas inherited North Munster (Thomond) and Eoghan inherited South Munster (Desmond). The families descended from the latter were known before the use of surnames as the Eoghannacht, and the surname MacCarthy (in Irish Mac Cárthaigh) is derived from Cárthach, Lord of the Eoghannacht who was burnt in a house by the Lonergans in 1045.The McCarthy Mór branch was located in Kerry. In 1172 the chief paid homage to King HENRY II, and another member of the family later accepted the earldom of Glencar from Queen Elizabeth.
The principal residence of the Muskerry, Co Cork, branch of the McCarthys was Blarney Castle.
