The ancestral families with collated information are shown in this index in bold under-lined capitals (e.g. AACHEN - Comtes). Each of these main entry sections begins with the page number emphasised in bold (e.g. 2) and ends on or immediately prior to the page number shown in bold for the next main entry section. Other ancestral families, titles and land holders known to have present day descendants are shown in bold normal type (e.g. Abbeville - Seigneurs). Individuals, titles and land holders who either died without known descendants or whose descendants have not been followed further during this compilation are shown in non-bold type (e.g. Abercorn - Earls), but doubtless many do nevertheless have present day descendants.
Names shown with the subtitles Lords of, Lairds of, Seigneurs, or Señores imply that the persons concerned lived at those places, in many cases being equivalent to feudal “Lords of the Manor”, and often such places were adopted as family names. For simplicity, and with apologies to ladies, all these sub-titles are given in the male gender.
Where an individual family name, title or place had two or more different spellings these have mostly been indexed under a single commonly used version, though a few exceptions (such as Stewart and Stuart) have been retained to distinguish separate lines of descent. So if the precise spelling of the name sought is not shown in the index it may be worth looking for any name which might have had a somewhat similar pronunciation albeit different spelling.
