Description This is a very nice open cluster for binoculars and small telescopes.  This image only shows a section of the northern part.  M46 is best known for the superimposed planetary nebula NGC2438 which appears at the centre of the image.  NGC 2438 is not part of the cluster and is in fact some 700 parsecs closer.
