Description M33 is a large face on spiral galaxy (80' x 50') of low surface brightness discovered by Messier in 1764.  It needs a dark site to be best seen but there is much intricate detail and individual objects visible within.  The best known of these objects is the giant emission nebula NGC 604 which is of similar morphology to the Tarantula nebula (NGC 2070) but much further away.  The estimated distance is about 3 million light years.
