The ANU Choral Society made a welcome contribution to the Canberra musical season with their concert at Bruce Hall last night, for it is some time since we have had a programme devoted almost exclusively to pure choral music.
By this I do not mean to imply that works such as Handel's Messiah are impure choral music; it is just that such music is for large, accompanied choral forces whereas last night we were able to hear great music of the 16th and 17th centuries sung by a capella choir of modest dimensions.
[...] singing, were worthy of serious consideration.
The Byrd Mass for five voices which followed was the most significant music of the first part of the concert; this lovely work was given a carefully-considered and well-sustained interpretation by the group of soloists. The fact that some parts had, apparently of necessity, to be doubled, did not unduly disturb the balance of voices.
