Hartley of Garran Hall (SCUNA member 1967-1971, stalwart of the bassline, and perpetrator of the original and best SCUNA Songbook) was, I believe, the creator of Ludwig, Kite Extraordinaire.
Various SCUNA and Garran Hall people could sometimes be found running around, flying and crashing Ludwig, on the meadow at the back of the Research School of Mathematics (now the Applied Mathematics Building). Parkes Way runs through that meadow now.
Ludwig was present at at least one SCUNA rehearsal that I remember. Rehearsals were held in what was then the Union building (it became the Chancelry Annex, and is now the Pauline Griffin Building) - useful balconies for kite-tethering. Unfortunately Ludwig escaped and had to be chased up Black Mountain by Hartley on his bicycle.
