PHILOMEL

As singers who have been active in Canberra for more than ten years, we have come to realise that a great deal of fine music either goes unperformed or receives performances which do it less than justice. We feel that this particularly applies to the lesser-known choral and vocal repertoire.

We have resolved to make some contribution to improving this aspect of music in Canberra. Accordingly, we have formed a partnership - PHILOMEL - to bring less well-known music to public performance. ("Philomel" is an old English name for the nightingale, and means "one who loves song".)

This is our first venture, and we intend to follow it with others. On each occasion we will assemble the musical forces necessary to present the works we have chosen in a convincing style.

We consider ourselves extremely fortunate to have the services of Nicholas Routley for our first concert.
