Chorister's stocking cap

Back in the old days, when choral intervarsity festivals were held in winter, everyone wore a stocking cap - the longer and more lurid, the better. Truly skilled knitters incorporated the names of festivals attended by the owner.

The one on the left (with names!) was knitted for Brian Hingerty by Ann May in 1971, and now belongs to my daughter Helen.

After the fashion of the time, I only ever knitted one stocking cap, and it was for my fiancé. Before becoming a member of his family, I'd only learnt to knit simple stuff, so it was a stocking cap in stocking stitch.

We chose the most lurid colours we could find - orange, purple, and a poisonous yellow - and he devised a pattern of bands based on pi.

It was important to have a big pom-pom: one chap actually had two.

I wonder what happened to all those stocking caps.
