DR JOSE RAMOS-HORTA CONGRATULATES XANANA GUSMAO ON HIS DECISION TO RUN FOR PRESIDENT
Cabinet Member for Foreign Affairs, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Dr Jose Ramos-Horta said he is extremely pleased by the decision of popular East Timorese Leader Xanana Gusmao to run for President.
“Once again Xanana has shown his love and loyalty to his people.” Dr Ramos Horta said.
“He is a wonderful human being and will be a great President of an independent East Timor”.
East Timor heads to the polls on August 30 to elect a Constituent Assembly in the countries first democratic elections. The announcement of the results is expected by September 10. The Assembly will then have three months to write the countries constitution, which will detail the Presidential election procedure.

* Mr Jose Ramos-Horta is an internationally-renowned spokesperson for the East Timorese cause. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1996 for “sustained efforts to hinder the oppression of small people”.
* Mr Ramos-Horta has been a dynamic and determined advocate for a free and independent East Timor. From 1976 until 1989, he was the permanent representative of the Frente Revolucionaria de Timor Leste Independente (FRETILIN) at the United Nations. He currently holds the position of Cabinet Member for Foreign Affairs, United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor.
