WEAPONS, POLITICAL INSTABILITY AND POVERTY

Senior Minister For Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Dr Jose Ramos-Horta called for an end to the devastating flood of conventional weapons to poor countries, at the Forum 2000 Conference hosted by Czech Republic President Vaclav Havel, in Prague today.

Former US President Bill Clinton along with Nobel Peace Prize Laureates former President of Costa Rica Oscar Arias Sanchez, and Ellie Weisel, are just some of the world-renowned personalities attending the fifth Forum 2000 conference at Prague Castle, which runs until October 17.

“Weapons producing countries must refrain from flooding poor countries with conventional weapons, exacerbating local and regional conflicts, thus contributing to political instability and impoverishment of already poor countries.” Dr Ramos-Horta told the conference.

In his opening remarks this afternoon the former US President Mr Bill Clinton referred to the Dr Ramos-Horta’s frequent past visits to Washington to lobby the political establishment there.

“I notice the presence in this conference of East Timor Foreign Minister Mr. Ramos-Horta ... I am glad he is now in office ... and not if my office.” Mr Clinton jested.

Dr. Ramos-Horta will attend a dinner hosted by President Vaclav Havel tonight. After delivering the keynote address in tomorrow’s session, Dr Ramos-Horta will travel to Paris for official talks with French Foreign Minister Mr. Hubert Vedrine.

* Dr Jose Ramos-Horta is an internationally-renowned spokesperson for the East Timorese cause. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1996 for “sustained efforts to hinder the oppression of small people”.

* Dr Ramos-Horta has been a dynamic and determined advocate for a free and independent East Timor. From 1976 until 1989, he was the permanent representative of the Frente Revolucionaria de Timor Leste Independente (FRETILIN) at the United Nations. He currently holds the position of Senior Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation in the United Nations appointed, all East Timorese, second transitional cabinet of East Timor.
