MILESTONE MEETINGS IN INDONESIA

Special Representative of the Secretary General Mr Sergio Vieira de Mello, Chief Minister Dr Mari Alkatiri and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Dr Jose Ramos-Horta will be in Jakarta to participate in bilateral talks with Indonesia on February 25, followed by a tripartite meeting, the first of its kind, to be held with Australia and Indonesia on February 26.

“The forthcoming meetings in Jakarta, the bilateral meetings between East Timor and Indonesia and the trilateral between East Timor, Indonesia and Australia, are a milestone both in the history of East Timor and in Regional relations. The East Timorese side pledges that, as a new country in the region, that we will work constructively with our neighbours to promote peace, stability and cooperation in this part of the world.” Dr Ramos-Horta said today.

The bilateral meeting aims to resolve bilateral issues that have been discussed between East Timor and Indonesia for the past two years. The meeting will define a new agenda of cooperation in light of East Timor’s upcoming independence.

The tripartite meeting will provide an opportunity to discuss issues of mutual concern between the three countries.
