Timor Sea Update & Coming Melbourne Meeting
15 August 2004:
Dear friends of the Timor Sea Justice Campaign,
You may have seen the news about an apparent breakthrough on the Timor
Sea issue. For the first time, Australia has indicated a willingness to
negotiate about all of the oil and gas fields in dispute. In exchange,
it seems that the East Timorese government is willing to put its
boundary claims on hold and focus on revenue sharing agreements.
While the Australian government's willingness to actually negotiate is
a step forward and encouragement for those campaigning on this issue,
the deal is not done - and so our work is far from finished.
The next round of talks between East Timor and Australia is due for
September 20th, and these talks will be very significant. This means
that the next month is perhaps the most important since the Timor Sea
Justice Campaign began.
After these talks, the period until the end of the year, when a deal
may be concluded, will also be critical.
In light of this, I would encourage everyone to get involved with the
campaign or to otherwise take action now.
In Melbourne, there will be a meeting this Wednesday 18 August at 6:30
at Trades Hall, cnr Victoria and Lygon Sts, Carlton.
Some of the
projects that will be discussed are:
* latest developments around the Timor Sea
* events in Canberra and Melbourne to coincide with the September 20
talks
* national tour of East Timorese activists in September
* developing new lobbying kits for the next month
* making the Timor Sea an election issue
* getting updated information about the issue out to the community
For those not in Melbourne or unable to come to our meetings, remember
to keep an eye on our website - http://www.TimorSeaJustice.org - for news and
things you can do, and meeting times all over Australia.
If you have ideas or suggestions and can't make it on Wednesday, please
do not hesitate to contact me on dan@timorseajustice.org or

289.
Thanks
Dan Nicholson
