JAN 2001 NEWS, ARTICLES & REPORTS
Access the following recently added January items at:
http://www.pcug.org.au/~wildwood/Jan2001NA&R.htm

Jan 15 SMH: Oil is more important to us than to Australia, says Gusmao [News]

Jan 15 Guardian: Return of the Revolutionaries [Article]
"It may simply be that women are speaking out about it [domestic violence] for the first time - but it is probably the single most important issue facing Timorese women today" Milena Pires

Jan 12 ETO: Timor Sea Oil and East Timor-Australia relations [Report]
"The Australian Government's recent record shows that it has been putting Timor Sea resources above any other consideration in its dealings with neighbouring countries. However, Australia stands to benefit far more from harmonious development within the region that will attract investment, for which Australia is better prepared than its neighbours." ETO

Jan 8 SMH: Racist, Cynical, Wasteful: How UN Workers 'Help' Timor [News]
"How you do your job counts just as much as what you do - and by this standard the UN is in need of rescuing itself ... The UN mission in ET, for example, is fraught with a debilitating patronage system, of personal self-interest, of ignorance and intolerance. All in all, this makes it a less-than-perfect tool to implement the will of the world's nations and give the Timorese dignity and a future." Denis Dragovic

Jan 6 AFP: Bishops say many East Timorese refugees want to go home [News]
"We reaffirm our support for efforts by the Indonesian government to provide security for the refugees, to facilitate their return and to monitor anyone who is exploiting the refugees' suffering for their political and economic benefits" Four bishops from ET & Indonesia

Jan 5 LH: text of UNTAET gag rule [Commentary & Text]
"The full text of a recent UNTAET directive which prohibits UNTAET mission personnel from communicating with anyone about the mission or other issues related to ET for the rest of their lives, unless they have specific written permission from top UNTAET officials. This document was shared with LH by an UNTAET staffer who is alarmed by the culture of secrecy and isolation that pervades the U.N. Transitional Administration in ET. LH encourages others who believe that the E. Timorese people have a right to know how their country is being governed to share information." Charles Scheiner

Jan 5 AU: Talks stall on Timor Gap oil profits [News]

Dec 10 ACFOA Position Paper: Negotiations of the Timor Gap Zone of Cooperation [Report]
"... it is critical to ensure that ET will have access and make good use of all its resources in order to enable the rehabilitation of its infrastructure and become in the medium term more economically self-sufficient and therefore less dependent on foreign aid. ... The E. Timorese should be given a larger share of the oil and gas resources than the one they presently receive under the Timor Gap Treaty." ACFOA

NOV 2000 NEWS, ARTICLES & REPORTS
Access the following recently added November items at:
http://www.pcug.org.au/~wildwood/Nov2000N&A.htm

Nov 17 LHB: Health, Wealth, Apologies and Oil: The East Timor-Australia Connection [Editorial]
"LH calls upon the Australian government to cease its demand for any rights to the oil and natural gas in the Timor Gap. ... basic justice requires that Canberra recognize and apologize for its shameful past. A concrete manifestation of such an act would be to allow East Timor to enjoy without sanction the full benefits of the oil and natural gas deposits in the Timor Sea. Such a gesture would be good for Australia’s political health." LH
