Update:

May 24 APHEDA: A Library for East Timor’s University  Request added June 22
"The situation for the E.T. university library is quite needy. The building for the library is being rebuilt, however, they have no funds to purchase or build the necessary furnishings such as shelving, desks, etc. While there appears to be a great desire amongst Australian academics to donate used books to the library, so much so that the library is being overwhelming by the volume, the greatest need at the moment is the library facilities." Hi BACK DOOR,

There are still problems [with sending books to ET Uni]. The NTEU in the ACT put out the  message below to its members on 30 January. However, I understand that the University Co-op Bookshop is participating in a “Books for East Timor” project along with the Research Institute for Asia and the Pacific (Melbourne University, I think). But this is a buy books for East Timor from the Bookshop scheme.

Dear Friends

During the past months you have contacted me wanting to know how to send books to East Timor and I asked you to wait as the email making the request for books (that we had all disseminated far and wide) had some wrong information in it.

The following is a message just received received from the people concerned in East Timor.

If you would really like to help at this time, financial donations via APHEDA will go directly to East Timor (state that is where you would like it to go) and it will certainly help the difficult situation being experienced in the setting up of the University.

PLEASE SEND DONATIONS TO -
APHEDA
Box 3, Trades Hall,
4 Goulburn Street

Please pass this along to those involved in collecting book resources.

The email networks have caused overload with misdirected information being sent out.  Unpaid post costing thousands of dollars is arriving in Dili.

Nor at this stage is there capacity to handle incoming English language book donations until further notice.

If you come across any groups disseminating requests for donations or related activities please send this out and ask that people spread the word.
