"Nope: No special funds to handle E. Timor refugees"

RUTENG - Manggarai regency sec., W.F.H. Nope, strongly denies there are special funds from the NTT govt. to handle E. Timor refugees who come from Manggarai.  He says the 1 billion rupiah being managed by the Manggarai Regional Development Planning Agency is for the poverty alleviation program and for disaster relief, and doesn't include aid funds for E. Timor refugees as recent rumors suggest.  The aid received from the Governor for refugees entering Manggarai from E. Timor, Mataram, Poso, and Ambon, consists of 10 tons of rice which have already been distributed.  He strongly denies information that is preading [sic - EH] that aid funds for the some 2000 refugees has been transferred for the benefit of the Manggarai regency govt. for empowerment of poor people.

As reported earlier, an assistant to the Manggarai sec., Rofinus Mbon, said that data from refugee delegates indicated that there indeed were funds distributed for them from the province via the Regional Development Planning Agency and that the aid should have been distributed to refugees during fiscal year 2000.  He said they would need to keep exploring to discover why the funds haven't yet been received by refugees.
