The United Nations Office in Timor-Leste (UNOTIL) is a special political mission established by Security Council resolution 1599 to carry out peace-building activities. UNOTIL commenced on 20 May 2005 and is mandated for one year until May 19, 2006. UNOTIL will support the capacity development of critical state institutions, including the National Police (PNTL) in order to strengthen democratic governance and to help further build peace in Timor Leste.

U.N. Office in Timor Leste (UNOTIL) is a smaller scale version of the previous mission U.N. Mission of Support in East Timor (UNMISET)
