URL6: A photogarph of the marble tablet erected in the church at Graaf Reinet by Lieutenant Colonel HENNIKER has been received by the Ballarat Stock Exchange. The inscription is as follows -"In memory of the undermentioned men of the Victorian Regiment who died for the empire - No 87, Sergeant JS HURST, No 135 Corporal CJ COCHEL, killed in action Coetzeeberg 27.4.1901. No 301 Trooper C MOORE killed in action Doornbosch 12.5.1901. No 269 Sergeant J POWELL, died at Graaf Reinet 13.6.1901. Be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed, for the Lord thy God is with thee withersoever thou goest. Erected by Lieut.-Colonel HENNIKER CB Coldstream Guards, who had the honour to have these gallant men under his command." Sergeant HURST was a popular member of the [Ballarat] exchange.
Roe: the following mention by Pte. WILLING DCM of a 4VIB man killed in action between April 22 and May 4 1901 possibly refers to Sergt. HURST.
URL7: Extract from letter sent by Private Justin W WILLING, 4VIB dated May 4 1901 ... "We lost two AIB's killed and three wounded. Mr. PARKER, at Henry Francis's, ?Bourke Street, had his son-in-law killed, having 13 wounds in him. It was terrible while it lasted. He had a splendid burial. We brought him 12 miles on a horse, and buried him at a farm-house".
