On the front of the memorial, facing the clock tower, the following words are inscribed - "Erected by the residents of Camperdown and district to the memory of the soldiers of the Empire who fell in the South African war, 1899 1902." On the opposite side, "War declared October 9th, 1899; peace declared, May 31st, 1902." The southern face bears the inscription - "Private Arthur JONES, VMR first contingent. Died on active service at Kroonstadt, October 24th, 1900. Aged, 22 year"; and the opposite side has the following - "Trooper John J LAURENCE, fifth contingent. Killed in action at Schurreberg Stock, August 23rd, 1901. Aged 20 years." URL8: Trooper BLOOM, of Stonyford, who went to South Africa with the Fifth Contingent, returned home a few days ago [c5.1902]. With the late Trooper J LAWRENCE, of Camperdown, he was one of the advance guard that came into contact with the Boers when young LAWRENCE met his death, shot through the heart by a bullet. It was in the same locality that Lieutenant MURPHY, of Colac, was fatally injured. BLOOM had a very unpleasant experience in the engagement. His horse reared, and at the same moment was struck by a ball that ended its career. The rider fell clear, and took refuge behind the dead steed till the main body came up. URL10: The following is part of a letter received by Mr. AF BOARDMAN from Private DW FORBES, of the 5th contingent. It is dated Wakerstroom, Nov. 20 [1901] - "Since August we have had some very lively times. On the way to Vryheid our right wing, who were advance guard under Major DALY, had a tough go with a good number of Boers who were pretty strongly entrenched on a high kopje. After fighting for an hour or so the Boers retired, but I am sorry to say not before killing Privates DOW and LAWRENCE and wounding Major DALY and 4 others. ...
