A memorial erected to the soldiers who died in Fort Franklin barracks, after returning from South Africa in the steamer Drayton Grange, was unveiled last week by the Rev. E RODDA, in Sorrento cemetery. A large number of spectators were present. A detachment of the VRRAA and the military band, with Lieutenant INNIS in charge, represented the military forces. Lieutenant-Colonel MCCAY, who had been invited to unveil the monument, was unable to attend owing to absence from the State. The inscription on the monument is as follows - 'In memoriam to the returned soldiers from South Africa by the Drayton Grange, who died in Fort Franklin Barracks, Portsea, August, 1902 - — A HUMPHRIES, H SHERRINGHAM, J GREEN, EP BARTON, W MACFARLANE. Erected by public subscription. Unveiled 27th April, 1905'.
URL4: According to Colonel LYSTER, the report of Dr. SHIELDS on the condition of things obtaining on the Drayton Grange was exaggereated. Troopers W MACFARLANE and Alick MCANDREW (believed to be an assumed name) died at Portsea (Vic.) hospital yesterday [20.8.1902].
URL5: Our Queenscliff correspondent telegraphed last night [14.8.1902] - "Trooper BARTON, of Queensland, died last night at Fort Franklin; and Trooper GROOM, of New South Wales, died this morning. There are several serious cases, including ALLAN and VOLUNCLUSE, third Battalion ACH, Queensland, and MCFARLANE."
URL6: The Riverina Bushmen - The following are the names of the 50 men selected at the Narandera tests after passing all trials for the Carrington Contingent. The names will be generally recognized as well known district residents, and young fellows who can be relied upon to maintain the high reputation which previous Riverina representatives have acquired at the war. The boys hail from Narandera, Hay, Darlington Point, Ganmain, Berrigan, Deniliquin, Jerilderie and Carrathool; and from Momalong, North Yanco, Kararbury, Widgiewa and Goolgumla Stations. Sylvester SMITH, A GOODMAN, WH ROACH, JT EMERY, James GREEN, Edgar EVANS, Wm. Thomas HOLLAND, Wm. Frederick PARKINSON, George H WALLER, John Joseph HORGAN, Joseph WILLIAMSON, W MCFARLANE (sic), Henry RYAN, Beecher ESPIE, J NORMAN, JJ CURTIN, WS KEEGAN, Edward JOLLEY, Joseph J MILLER, Bert. DUNSTAN, Edwd. RYAN, Archd. SIMPSON, Samuel Pitt STOKES, WC PEARSON, FW VERNON, F JACKA, HB ROSS, HD BUTTON, Fred. KENNEWELL and Alfred JOSEPHS. Lieutenant Tyrell EVANS, well-known in the Riverina, is acting as adjutant of the detachment. This officer served in South Africa with the Fourth Victorian Contingent under Lieutenant-Colonel KELLY.
