Hint: This site is intended as a search aid - not a definitive source. It is essentially an index to documents that seem to relate to this person plus a very brief precis of relevant elements. Sources often conflict and I also flag things with a ? when I am unsure. So if the information below is important to you, then please check the original sources to see what else they contain (and in case I have inadvertantly introduced transcription and/or precising errors). There can be additional information that was not included in the database for both space and copyright reasons.

ColacHd: Universal regret was expressed in Colac on Saturday afternoon [15.6.1901] when the sad intelligence was received that Lieutenant AE MURPHY had been shot in South Africa. He went with the Fifth Victorian Contingent, and while the latter were engaged with the Boers at Middlekraal, in the Transvaal, on the 20.5.1901 he and three other Victorians were killed. Lieutenant MURPHY, who was a member of the local detachment of ?ounted Rifles when he joined the contingent, entered on the war in a most whole-hearted manner. He was anxious to rise in the service, as Sergeant-Major BOURKE spoke in eulogistic terms of him at the banquet in Colac on Thursday evening, remarking that whatever duty was allotted to him at Langwirrin he did it cheerfully and did it well; and was soon promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. It was little thought during the merry-making on the evening in question for the returned men that a Colac representative was lying in a soldier's grave on the veldt in South Africa. He was a most active and fearless man, and would, with experience make an ideal soldier, and it is to be regretted that he came to such an untimely end. The late Lieutenant MURPHY was 38 years of age, was the son of the late Mr Edward MURPHY, of the firm of Messrs. Nutt and Murphy; soliciors, Melbourne. He was also a nephew of Mrs ROBERTSON, of The Hill. He was born at Toorak, sent to, England to be educated, and upon his return he spent some years in New South Wales and Queensland, but was not over successful. About six years ago he came to Colac, where he followed grazing and dairying pursuits until he left for South Africa. The deceased was a member of all local institutions; but took a particularly deep and active interest in the Colac Dairying Company, the Agricultural Society and the Polo Club. He was chairman of directors of the Colac Dairying Company, and so well did he discharge the duties that the shareholders decided to present him with a souvenir, but it did not reach him. His wife died about three years ago, and this considerably affected him. He leaves no family. Flags were flying at half-mast at different places in Colac on Sunday and again yesterday, and there were many expressions of regret at the fact that Lieuitenant MURPHY would return no more. When the late Lieutenant Murphy was leaving Colac the "shareholders of the Dairying Company and other admirers in meeting assembled decided to present hint with a handsome album, with an ad dress suitably inscribed, and the signatures of. tho various subscribers attached. To procure the signatures necessarily took some time, and the work was only just on the point of completion when the news of his death came to hand. DMr C. A. Tulloh has therefore convened a meeting of the subscribers to the fund for Saturday after noon next at the Fire Brigade Station at three o'clock, to consider what further action shall be taken.

ColacHd: A MEMORIAL TABLET TO BE ERECTED IN THE COLAC FREE LIBRARY. Some considerable time past it will be remembered at a meeting of citizens, it was resolved to perpetuate the memory of the district soldiers who fell fighting for the Empire's cause in South Africa, by the erection of a brass tablet in the local Free Library. In view of the fact that the war was in progress at the time the movement was initiated, and that there were still several district soldiers at the front South, the completion of the work was delayed for a time. It has, however, now been completed and the Secretary, Mr HM HEARN, has received the tablet. It is of brass and of neat design, and will form a lasting tribute to the brave men who fell fighting for the cause of justice. Above the names of the fallen soldiers are representations of the Union Jack and the Australian Flag. A word of praise is due to Mr HEARN, the secretary, for the great amount of work he has done in connection with the matter. The inscription on the tablet is as follows - THIS TABLET Commemorates the Death, in the cause of the Empire, of four Young Men of this District - EDGAR QUARTUS ROBERTSON, NOEL LEONARD CALVERT, ARTHUR EDWARD MURPHY, Who were Killed whilst Fighting in South Africa, and of THOMAS YATES Who Died Immediately Upon his Return To Victoria. A.D. 1901.
ColacHd: In connection with the memorial tablet to be erected in the Colac Free Library, to perpetuate the memory of Captain EQ ROBERTSON, Lieutenant Noel L CALVERT, Lieutenant E MURPHY and Trooper Thos. YATES, who fell fighting the Empire's cause in South Africa, there will be a meeting of the Tablet Committee this evening [17.6.1902] to choose the spot where the tablet will be erected.

Apology: For some time now it has been difficult to keep up with the newly available sources (especially the Trove newspaper site) plus the flow of contributions and queries. So I have been forced to prioritise maintenance and data entry over replying to correspondence. Nevertheless, your contributions are being added to the database and acknowledged on the contributions page and, although my replies are many months behind, I will attempt to get to them more often.
