Hint: This site is intended as a search aid - not a definitive source. It is essentially an index to documents that seem to relate to this person plus a very brief precis of relevant elements. Sources often conflict and I also flag things with a ? when I am unsure. So if the information below is important to you, then please check the original sources to see what else they contain (and in case I have inadvertantly introduced transcription and/or precising errors). There can be additional information that was not included in the database for both space and copyright reasons.

Murray: died 17.7.1902 Newcastle.
B5204: Lance Corporal, a dentist aged 22 from Wagga NSW.
URL2: Wagga NSW, Carrington Contingent photo.
URL3: L/Cpl., amongst the Carrington Contingent (Riverina Bushmen) reinforcements who embarked for S. Africa from Sydney on the 'Manhattan' 1.4.1902.
URL4: DEATH OF MR. CHARLES SHAW. Of the many sad messages which have came to this State from South Africa, happily few have excited more than a general sorrow in Wagga. But an exception, which gave rise to special regret, was cabled out on Saturday [19.7.1902], when it was known that one of the soldiers sent from this town would return no more. The unwelcome news was received by Mr. W SHAW, senr., that his son Charles, aged 21, who went over to the seat of war with the Carrington Scouts under Lieut. TAYLER in March last, had died of dysentery. Nothing definite was convoyed in the message, but it is presumed that he was returning from Klerksdorp, on the way to join his ship for home when he was stricken down. Death took place on Monday last. Mr. Charles SHAW was the fifth son of Mr. and Mrs. William SHAW, senr., of Gurwood Street, and for some years prior to his connection with the Carrington Scouts was serving his articles with Dr. JS TAYLER, late of Fitzmaurice Street. Sympathy is expressed with the relatives of the deceased young gentleman who was well known and very widely respected.
URL5: Trooper Chas. SHAW, of the Carrington Contingent, whose death is reported to have occurred in South Africa, was the son of a well-known Wagga merchant, and was formerly a member of the firm of Messrs. Peapes and Shaw, of Sydney.
URL6: At the Freemason's Hotel, Wagga, last evening [21.3.1902], Captain J Sinclair TAYLER and Corporal SHAW, who, with a number of members of the Carrington Contingent, are at present on a visit to Wagga, were given an enthusiastic send-off. The gathering, which had been organised by members of the Cycling and swimming clubs and friends, took the form of a social.

Please email me if you can contribute any other relevant information about this person (eg any other military service, where in Australia they came from or when/where they died). Also, if you find an external link broken.

Apology: For some time now it has been difficult to keep up with the newly available sources (especially the Trove newspaper site) plus the flow of contributions and queries. So I have been forced to prioritise maintenance and data entry over replying to correspondence. Nevertheless, your contributions are being added to the database and acknowledged on the contributions page and, although my replies are many months behind, I will attempt to get to them more often.
