Hint: This site is intended as a search aid - not a definitive source. It is essentially an index to documents that seem to relate to this person plus a very brief precis of relevant elements. Sources often conflict and I also flag things with a ? when I am unsure. So if the information below is important to you, then please check the original sources to see what else they contain (and in case I have inadvertantly introduced transcription and/or precising errors). There can be additional information that was not included in the database for both space and copyright reasons.

Source:# 1286 Richard (known as Dick and Arthur) WEPPLER born approx. 1876, no birth registration, son of Charles WEPPLER and Jane MOON. He would have been born in the Bega District. BURGESS on 20.5.1905. On the marriage certificate (3238/1905) Richard is

URL3: Bega War Memorial unveiled c9.1905, Tpr. R WEPPLER amongst those from the District who served in S. Africa. URL4: Pte. 329 R WEPPELER still dangerously ill at Charlestown 21.12.1901. URL5: Another Beqa Man Wounded. Mrs. WEPPLER, of Bega NSW, received a wire from the Under-Secretary's Office, Brisbane, on Thursday 12.12.1901, informing her that her son, Private WEPPLER, of the Fifth Queensland Bushmen, had been dangerously wounded in the abdomen at Elandsberg, Wakkestroom, Soutb Africa. As Mrs. WEPPLER thinks that both her eldest sons went to the front, it is not definitely known which of them it is who has been wounded, but it is presumed that it is the oldest, Arthur, who is about 26 years of age. He is a native of Bega, and went to the Richmond River some years ago, and from there to Queensland. Being a typical Australian bushmen, the love of adventure naturally led him into joining one of the contingents from the northern colony, and it may be mentioned that tbe contingent to which he belongs has been doing a lot of fighting, and in the engagement in which he was wounded, which took place on 6.12.1901, nine others of the same contingent were also wounded. URL6: Equally exciting was the fighting on the right of the advance screen. Sergeant-Major PRICE and Trooper WEPLER have dashed right on to a party of Boers. The
sergeant-major shoots one at short range, but cut off and surrounded they are forced to surrender. WEPLER, thinking after "Brother Boer," had taken his rifle and ammunition that he might go back to his lines, walks away. At a range of fourteen yards a young Boer shoots him through the body. The Commandant, to his credit, expresses regret, and prevents the comrade of the wounded man being further molested. Meanwhile, Major Toll has all his men lined on a ridge on the right. Attempt after attempt of the enemy to outflank him is frustrated. One Boer, more daring than the others, actually galloped up so near as to be heard shouting " Come on, we've got them now." Not so; the QIB got him. When picked up it was found he was dangerously wounded, a bullet having pierced his brain. URL7: Casualties. Fifth Queensland Bushmen - Up to December 21 [1901] Private Richard WEPPLER was still lying dangerously ill at Charlestown from gunshot wound. Of same corps, and on same date Private William LINTON was lying dangerously ill at Kroonstad.

Apology: For some time now it has been difficult to keep up with the newly available sources (especially the Trove newspaper site) plus the flow of contributions and queries. So I have been forced to prioritise maintenance and data entry over replying to correspondence. Nevertheless, your contributions are being added to the database and acknowledged on the contributions page and, although my replies are many months behind, I will attempt to get to them more often.
