Hint: This site is intended as a search aid - not a definitive source. It is essentially an index to documents that seem to relate to this person plus a very brief precis of relevant elements. Sources often conflict and I also flag things with a ? when I am unsure. So if the information below is important to you, then please check the original sources to see what else they contain (and in case I have inadvertantly introduced transcription and/or precising errors). There can be additional information that was not included in the database for both space and copyright reasons.

Extracts and Comments (from Sources as shown) | | Murray: Pay Sergeant. Regal: Queen's South Africa medal and 5 clasps (CC OFS Tvl SA01 & SA02). B5172: next of kin in Albion Qld. URL1: 1954 correspondence from Kirribilli NSW. URL3: The staff of the Commissioner for Railways Office met at the Transcontinental Hotel yesterday afternoon [28.2.1901] for the purpose of making a presentation to Mr. Jack BURTON on the occasion oí his departure to South Africa with the Fifth Contingent. The chair was occupied by Mr. MS DAVIS,
traffic auditor, who made feeling reference to the loss, which he trusted would only be temporary, of such a genial companion as they all found Jack. Whether in his official duties or on the athletic field he had always exhibited those good qualities which go to make a worthy soldier. He trusted to Private BURTON would acquit himself as creditably in South Africa as he had done here and return safe and sound to his old comrades. On behalf of the head office staff he presented Mr. BURTON with a bracelet watch and a purse of sovereigns. Mr. BURTON suitably thanked his fellow officers, and trusted that he would return successfully from the task he had undertaken and soon be back amongst them. Several other toasts were also honoured, including that of Mr. AD CAMPBELL. That gentleman, whose son had been a member of the First Contingent, had made all arrangements to go with the contingent to South Africa, but was unable to obtain the necessary leave of absence from his official duties. Mr. CAMPBELL, in a very earnest speech, impressed on those present the necessity of everyone being over ready to assist his country in time of danger. Several of those present contributed songs and recitations, which considerably added to the enjoyableness of the function. The company dispersed with three hearty cheers for "Jack" BURTON. To-night [1.3.1901] Mr. BURTON will be entertained with a number of other members of the North Brisbane Swimming Club, who are also members of the contingent, at the Diggers' Arms Hotel.

Apology: For some time now it has been difficult to keep up with the newly available sources (especially the Trove newspaper site) plus the flow of contributions and queries. So I have been forced to prioritise maintenance and data entry over replying to correspondence. Nevertheless, your contributions are being added to the database and acknowledged on the contributions page and, although my replies are many months behind, I will attempt to get to them more often.
