Hint: This site is intended as a search aid - not a definitive source. It is essentially an index to documents that seem to relate to this person plus a very brief precis of relevant elements. Sources often conflict and I also flag things with a ? when I am unsure. So if the information below is important to you, then please check the original sources to see what else they contain (and in case I have inadvertantly introduced transcription and/or precising errors). There can be additional information that was not included in the database for both space and copyright reasons.

URL10: Mr George BUNTING has received the following interesting letter from his son, Private E BUNTING [5VMR, dated] Groutfontein, Jan. 27 [1902]. ... Remember me to the officers and men of the 3rd Battalion, especially the comrades in my old company (B); Tell them that I wish to state that there are no better officers, and also officers who are more respected, and whose services are more in demand, than those who were trained in the 3rd. We have noble examples in the persons of the late Lieutenants COULTER, JOHNSON, and PALMER, and living examples in the persons of Captain COLTMAN - who, by the way, is captain of my own company - Lieutenant HENWOOD and Sergeant-Major WAIGHT. All of these men have been connected with the 3rd Battalion, and I think it is not saying too much when I say - and my opinion is endorsed by every man in the 5th VMR - that the officers mentioned are prized, and their services are in great demand by our commanding officer. Of the privates, I might mention young WILES of H Company. He is the youngest of us all, but he is also the pluckiest, and he has earned a good reputation for himself by his work in his own company. Eddie WILSON, our bugler, is attached to C Company, and has a good time of it as he is a general favorite. Private CROWLEY and Saddler-Sergeant BOWMAN are in D Company. Of the first I have not much to say as he is in the right half, and I do not get much opportunity of associating with him. Saddler-Sergeant BOWMAN I have not seen for five months, as he has been away from the column. For myself, as I have said before, I have at all times done my duty to the best of my ability, and I have always and in all places tried to do credit to the training I have received in the good old 3rd.
Ball. Star: Yesterday afternoon [10.2.1902] members of the Ballarat Football Club assembled at the Unicorn Hotel to bid farewell to Lieutenant F RODD, who has been accepted for service in South Africa with the Second Federal Contingent. Though the Ballarat Football Club were the promoters of the function there were representatives of all the other clubs, besides other athletic associations. The chairman of the Football Association, Mr RS FOLEY, explained that the club had now contributed two of its secretaries to the war, the first being the late Lieutenant S COULTER. In handing to Lieutenant RODD a very handsome travelling bag, inscribed, “Presented to 'Lieutenant F RODD by the Ballarat Football Club.' the chairman complimented the recipient on the spirit which had led him to volunteer for service at the front. It was pleasant to know this, but it was the reverse to have to part with an old friend and comrade. His absence from the club would be a big loss, and the bank officials all testified to the worth of Mr RODD as an officer. He was but one of the prominent men which the club had sent out to the war - Tom PARKIN, Alfred WANLISS and last, but not least, Syd. COULTER, a man honored by all, and one who had nobly given up his life for his country. In Mr. RODD they expected to have as good a representative as any yet sent, and they all wished him good luck, and asked him to come back, not as Lieutenant RODD, but as Captain RODD. (Cheers.) The health of Mr RODD was then honored, and in responding Lieutenant RODD remarked that though he had sought no less than four times to get to the front, he was sorry to leave the old club, in which he had spent such happy days. He wished the club every success, and he thanked them heartily for their useful and timely gift- Lieutenant RODD leaves for the camp to-day.
Sunb. News: The following is part of a letter received by Mr. AF BOARDMAN from Private DW FORBES, of the 5th contingent. It is dated Wakerstroom, Nov. 20 [1901] - "Since August we have had some very lively times. On the way to Vryheid our right wing, who were advance guard under Major DALY, had a tough go with a good number of Boers who were pretty strongly entrenched on a high kopje. After fighting for an hour or so the Boers retired, but I am sorry to say not before killing Privates DOW and LAWRENCE and wounding Major DALY and 4 others. We arrived at Vryheid next day, and met Colonel STEWART's column, chiefly composed of the Johannesburg Mounted Rifles, among whom are several Victorians who joined in South Africa. We spent two days, and our own and STEWART's column went out towards Zululand on the third day. We were only a few miles out when we heard the old familiar 'ping-pong'. Our left flankers were the first to get it, and we soon got our pompom and 15-pounders into action. It was a terribly rugged range of kopjes the Boers were firing from, and when our left half wing operated on the right of it they were placed at a great disadvantage, as they had to attack under virtually no cover at all. After a very severe fight, in which we lost Lieutenant COULTER and six wounded, we retired, having only succeeded in capturing one Boer. ...

Apology: For some time now it has been difficult to keep up with the newly available sources (especially the Trove newspaper site) plus the flow of contributions and queries. So I have been forced to prioritise maintenance and data entry over replying to correspondence. Nevertheless, your contributions are being added to the database and acknowledged on the contributions page and, although my replies are many months behind, I will attempt to get to them more often.
