Hint: This site is intended as a search aid - not a definitive source. It is essentially an index to documents that seem to relate to this person plus a very brief precis of relevant elements. Sources often conflict and I also flag things with a ? when I am unsure. So if the information below is important to you, then please check the original sources to see what else they contain (and in case I have inadvertantly introduced transcription and/or precising errors). There can be additional information that was not included in the database for both space and copyright reasons.

URL4: 3rd Contingent Mounted Rifles (Victorian Bushmen), killed in action at Ottoshoop 20.8.1900.
URL5: BALLARAT. A mural tablet, elected to the memory of Ballarat Collegians, who fell to the South African war, was unveiled by the principal (Mr. John GARBUTT MA) at the college on Wednesday [8.4.1903]. The tablet, which was provided by the old boys' committee, bears the following inscription. - "In memory of old collegians, who died in the war in South Africa, 1890-1902 - Lieutenant A GILPIN, Surgeon-Lieutenant HA PALMER, Sergeant A VAUGHAN, Private TB FOSTER. Their duty done, they rest with God."
URL6: ... the Stock Exchange of Melbourne has contributed several officers to the contingents which have gone to South Africa. One (Lieutenant EMBLING of the AIR), who has returned, took part in the demonstration yesterday [2.6.1902]. To one (Lieutenant A GILPIN), who will never return (having been killed in action at Ottoshoop about two years ago), a memorial tablet has been erected in the Call Room. Others (Captain MEADOWS, Lieutenant G MOORE and Captain CLEMENTS) are still in the field. It will thus be seen how strong, apart from the appeal to their pockets through the market, is the Stock Exchange's sentiment in the proclamation of peace in South Africa.
URL7: News of the death of Lieutenant AG GILPIN in South Africa was received at Ballarat with deep regret, for he was most popular there. His brother, Lieutenant Thomas J GILPIN, is also fighting in South Africa. A somewhat remarkable coincidence as related by their father - Mrs. GILPIN dreamed that two of her fingers were cut, on one finger the incision going right around, on the other the cut appeared to be only semi-circular. Mrs. GILPIN mentioned the dream to her husband in the morning, and he remarked that probably the cut seen in the dream, and extending right round one finger, indicated the death of one of the sons serving in South Africa, while the incised wound on the second finger meant that the other son would be wounded. Mr. GILPIN, who is bearing up bravely under his bereavement, states that he would not now be surprised if word came that "Tom" had been wounded.

Please email me if you can contribute any other relevant information about this person (eg any other military service, where in Australia they came from or when/where they died). Also, if you find an external link broken.

Apology: For some time now it has been difficult to keep up with the newly available sources (especially the Trove newspaper site) plus the flow of contributions and queries. So I have been forced to prioritise maintenance and data entry over replying to correspondence. Nevertheless, your contributions are being added to the database and acknowledged on the contributions page and, although my replies are many months behind, I will attempt to get to them more often.
