"Map, Territory and Environment"

We're looking forwards to meeting Professor Lance Strate in Sydney on 15 June 2024.

Dr Lance Strate is Professor of Communication and Media Studies at Fordham University in New York City, and President of the Institute of General Semantics will be visiting Sydney.

He plans to address our AGS group on Saturday the 15th June at 10am, which will be held in person at Sydney University. It will also be shared online via Zoom.

“The map is not the territory” is Alfred Korzybski’s best known aphorism, and represents a central tenet for the discipline of general semantics. In this seminar, we will consider what is meant by “map” and what is meant by “territory” with the understanding that our main concern is with map-territory relationships.

Along with reviewing some of the basics of general semantics, and in the interests of avoiding a two-valued orientation, Dr. Strate will also incorporate a third term, “environment” and discuss its implications.
