INTRODUCTION
Research for these families has been extremely difficult, given the number of times the family names are repeated, and the intermarriage between families. Naively, when I first started my research I thought I could keep the McLean and McKenzie data in separate files. Now I find that even when they came to Australia the families continued to inter marry, and many other of the names from the Scottish Islands and Highlands also reappear such as McSwain (and its variants), McLeod, McDonald, McQuinn

Many others have helped me in my search including Australian descendants Allan Jamieson, Denise McNamara, Ruth Mingins, Lois Morrison, and Dale Watts,
as well as research done by Jenny Fawcett

THE FAMILY IN SCOTLAND
Norman  MCLEAN was born Abt. 1793 in SCT, and died in the spring of 1852.
He married Ann MCKENZIE Abt. 1820 in Isle of Raasay, SCT, daughter of Murdoch MCKENZIE and Isabella MCLEOD.
Ann was born Abt. 1795 in Isle of Raasay, SCT, and died 5 July 1890 in Framlingham, Vic, AUS

In the 1841 census the whole family was living at Screapadal, and had moved to Fearns by 1851.
By this time Murdoch the elder had married and was living with Flora McLeod the mother of his wife.

The clearances undertaken by landlords in the Highlands and Islands to make way for sheep have been well documented.
The MacLeods, traditional owners of Raasay were no exception to this, and when the island was sold to George Rainey, in 1843, he continued to do the same.
Bad weather resulted in poor crops and the fishing was for many years poor as well. If people did not “volunteer” to emigrate he moved them from township to township on the island, each area progressively poorer until they were forced to leave.  Grazing land for their cattle was taken from them and so unless they went they starved.

EMIGRATION
Annie was assisted to emigrate (‘lent’ 29 pounds 7 shillings) by the Highland and Island Emigration Society. With her five youngest children, she travelled in the Edward Johnstone, which sailed from Liverpool 17 June 1854 and arrived at Portland, Victoria Australia on 3 Sept 1854 after a journey of 78 days.
In Vic she was to work as a domestic servant with her sons.
Her eldest son Murdoch, had emigrated previously, on the Miltiades which arrived in Melbourne on 16 October 1852.

iv.  Malcolm MCLEAN, b. Abt. 1833 SCT; d. 1883, Ballangeich, Vic, AUS
From the applications for land in the Wimmera, it would seem that Malcolm, who still had 121 acres in Cooramook, also intended to move north with other family members. His original application for a selection was dated 22nd May 1874. But he died before the transaction was finalised and his mother and younger brother Murdoch took over his selection in Nullan. (Allotment 60)

 v.  Margaret MCLEAN, b. Abt. 1837 SCT; d. 18 February 1859, Glencoe Farm. (called Peggy on the immigration details)
We have found no evidence that Peggy married.

vi.  John MCLEAN, b. Abt. 1839 SCT; d. Unknown.
It is possible he returned to Scotland, after selling his land here to fund Murdoch the younger’s move to the Wimmera

vii.  Murdoch MCLEAN, b. 1840, SCT; m. Annie McKenzie, Warrnambool, Vic, AUS; d. 18 March 1928, Minyip, Vic, AUS.
