The Family of
Murdoch McLean c.1840 – 1928 and Annie McKenzie c.1849-1929

Murdoch McLean was born on the Isle of Raasay to Annie (McKenzie) and Norman McLean, in 1840. He was the second child to take the name Murdoch; his older brother also named Murdoch, being alive at that time. So Wee Murdoch was known as Murdo Beag Maclean.
I have been told that the reason for duplicate names is that the maternal and paternal sides of the family both needed to be represented.
Patronymics are still used on Raasay today, which assists to identify which person belongs to which family even if the names are the same.

 Murdoch was a child of thirteen when he arrived in Australia with his mother and siblings in 1854.
He married in 1869 another emigrant from Raasay, Annie McKenzie, who was also his first cousin. (His mother and her father were brother and sister.)
Their first three children were born in Cooramook, but by 1874 with his mother, and brother Malcolm applications were made for land selection in Nullan in the Wimmera.
Malcolm died prematurely, but Murdoch and his family made the move to the Wimmera.

1. Margaret Ann MCLEAN, born 23 September 1869, Cooramook, Vic, AUS; died 23  December 1926. In 1893 Margaret married Hugh Vernon MCLEOD b. 1866 to George and Mary (McDonald) .
McLeod Hugh died in 1944, Castlemaine, Vic, AUS.

2. Catherine MCLEAN, born 29 November 1872, Cooramook, Vic, AUS; died 6 November 1950, Swan Hill, 
Vic,AUS; On 19 January 1902, at Sheep Hills, Vic, AUS Catherine married Joseph SIMPSON, who was born 
about 1868, Aberdeen, SCT

3. Norman John (Noddy) MCLEAN, born 3 October 1874, Cooramook, Vic, AUS; died 10 March 1928, Minyip, Vic, AUS. Norman married  Mary BOYD on 24 March 1902, daughter of Alexander BOYD and Elizabeth JONES.  Mary was born 27 July 1880, and died 4 March 1923.

4. Isabella MCLEAN, born 13 July 1877, Nullan, Vic, AUS; died 31 December 1916; married John (Jack) COWAN, 28 March 1900; b. 27 August 1868, Skipton, Vic, AUS; d. Unknown.

5. Annie MCLEAN, born 12 March 1879, Nullan, Vic, AUS; died 12 August 1948, Minyip, Vic, AUS.
Annie broke with tradition when she married George PENNY 8 February 1905 in Minyip, Vic, AUS as he was not 
of Scottish descent. (his parents came from Devon)  He was born 10 April 1873 in North Rhine, S.A., AUS, 
and died 22 September 1953 in Minyip, Vic, AUS.

6. Alexander MCLEAN, born about 1881, Minyip, Vic, AUS; died 1882, Minyip, Vic, AUS

7.  Agnes (Toppy) MCLEAN, born 24 December 1882, Nullan, Vic, AUS; died 27 August 1916.She married 
Walter Herbert (Mick) MCLEOD 7 October 1908, son of Murdock MCLEOD and Susan SMITH.  He was born 29May 1886 in Horsham, Vic, AUS, and died 7 June 1963 in Preston, Vic, AUS.
There is one child for this couple.

Annie Isabell McLeod b: 1909 in Rainbow, vic. AUS, d: 1985 in Minyip, Vic AUS who married in 1932 Harold Leslie Watson b: 1908 in Horsham, Vic, AUS, m: , d: 1973 in Horsham

After Toppy died Mick married her sister Effie.

8. Flora Mary (Madge) MCLEAN, born 23 October 1885, Nullan, Vic, AUS; died 29 March 1965, Melbourne; 
She married Allan George MCLEAN, on 8 January 1913, at Mount Pleasant, Vic, AUS; Allan was born 20 December 1884, Minyip, Dunmunkle, Vic, AUS; d. 25 July 1952, Footscray. Allan’s parents were George 
and Sarah (MILLGATE) McLean.

9. Alexander Malcolm MCLEAN, born 25 June 1887, Nullan, Vic, AUS; died 1950, Collingwood, Vic, AUS.
He married Edith HEATH  in1911.  She was born 26 September 1890 in Sheep Hills, Vic, AUS, and died 14 
October 1972 in Preston, Vic, AUS

10. Euphemia (Effie Jessie) (Sis) MCLEAN, born 14 June 1889, Nullan, Vic, AUS; died 7 March 1972.
She married her brother-in-law Walter Herbert (Mick) MCLEOD, son of Murdock MCLEOD and Susan SMITH. 
He was born 29 May 1886 in Horsham, Vic, AUS, and died 7 June 1963 in Preston, Vic, AUS.
