PROGRAMME NOTES

1. 'Missa Brevis' No. 119 - Victoria

This Mass is also called '0 Magnum Mysterium'. Composed in 1592 and dedicated to Prince Albert, Cardinal of Spain, at the time when Victoria was Chaplain to the court of Empress Maria.

It is part of his second book of Masses, which contained seven Masses.

2. 'Come Ye Sons of Art' - Purcell

'Come Ye Sons of Art' was the fourth ode composed for the Birthday of Queen Mary in 1694, which was also the year of her death.

3. 'Missa Brevis' in C, K. 259, 'Little Organ Mass' - W.A. Mozart

Written in 1776, when Mozart was 21 years of age, the 'Little Organ Mass' was an attempt to develop a genuinely popular style.

The Mass was designed for the Archbishop's usual services, in which brevity and clarity of text was considered to be essential. Hence there are no long or telescopic Gloria and Credo.

Scored for strings, trumpets, timpani and a solo organ, four solo voices and chorus.

4. Excerpts from 'Peter Grimes' - Benjamin Britten

   i) Round 'Old Joe Has Gone Fishing' - Act I, Scene 2.

This round occurs in the fishing village where the opera is set, and is sung by the people of the village.

ii) Mad Scene - Act III, Scene 2.

This is the end of the opera. Grimes has had two apprentices. The first one died of dehydration on a fishing trip after he and Peter were caught in a storm. The second one fell over a cliff near Peter's house just outside the village. The coroner brought down a verdict of 'accidental circumstances'.

The village has ostracised Peter as a result. In this scene, Balstrode tells Peter to take his boat out to sea and sink it. Ellen, the village school teacher, and Peter's only friend is the only one who objects.

5. 'Canticle : In Memory of Benjamin Britten' (World premiere Performance) - Donald Hollier

"Without a doubt the music of Benjamin Britten has had a significant influence on my own progress as a composer. These influences are not so much in terms of harmony or melody as in

  1. his use of the English language
  2. his interest in writing for children and amateurs
  3. his skill in the use of dramatic forms
  4. his love of Purcell and
  5. his sheer technical skill.

'Canticle In Memory of Benjamin Britten' is my hommage for these influences. I have chosen the poem by Edith Sitwell which was commissioned by Britten and dedicated to him and first read by Edith Sitwell at the concert to celebrate the 300th anniversary of Purcell's birth.

'Praise Ye Great Men'" - Donald Hollier
