THE CREATION

A ROCK CANTATA by David Bobrowitz & Steven Porter

The words to this piece are adapted from the book of GENESIS and expressed in a modern idiom. The tempi range from "slow, mysterious" through "slow, rock blues" to "fast driving rock".

"In the beginning God created the Heaven and the earth. And the earth it was without a form and the darkness covered the face of the deep.

On the sixth day, according to His plan, the Lord took up a lump of clay and built Himself a man. And He taught the man to love and He taught not to hate; and He taught him how to give and He taught him when to take; and He taught him how to work and He taught him when to rest; and He taught the man to dream and He told him he was blessed.

And the Lord looked around and saw that it was good. The evening came; the morning passed. A seventh day......."

LIFE STYLE: TV - ARTS - ENTERTAINMENT

MUSIC By W. L. HOFFMANN

Concert in keeping with Christmas cheer

ANU CHORAL SOCIETY CONCERT. University House. Sunday, December 9.

Christmas has traditionally been the season of good cheer, and in keeping with that feeling the ANU Choral Society presented a pleasantly cheerful concert at University House on Sunday night.

This program for Christmas opened with a "rock-cantata" by David Bobrowitz and Steven Porter, 'The Creation', which, based on the book of Genesis, has nothing to do with Christmas; but it is rhythmic and melodious and was given a lively and swinging performance. Just the right type of light, relaxing music for this time of the year.

With an accompaniment of piano, lead guitar, bass guitar and drums, it was as attractive as it was unusual, and the conductor, Keith Radford, kept the performance moving right along. After this work, which lasts only about 16 minutes or so, the singers re-entered the hall through the main doors and passed down between the audience in the "processional" which opens Britten's 'Ceremony of Carols'.

Originally for treble voices and harp, this work was sung on Sunday night in Julius Harrison's arrangement for four-part choir and piano, an arrangement which loses some of the piquancy of the original. Nevertheless, it was again quite well-sung, perhaps without enough subtlety, but certainly with splendid spirit.

As the singers left in the final "recessional", the audience was exhorted to follow them to the Fellows Garden where, amidst the trees and under the stars, they joined together in the partaking of refreshments and the singing of carols.

With the blessing of a warm and still evening, this was a charming way to finish a Christmas concert - the large audience attending seemed to enjoy with seasonable cheefulness all the performances, both formal and informal.
