Official organ of SCUNA          OYEZ!          20.6.7I1

This OYEZ was to have been headed with the insignia of a woman rampant (or couchant, whichever you prefer), however the College of Heralds was unable to have it ready in time. As foretold in the last OYEZ, a General Meeting was held last Sunday to elect a new President. Your friendly correspondent (otherwise known as Sue Baldwin) was elected to hold this high office (you have to be over 5'8½" to be SCUNA Pres).

It was also decided at the meeting that mid-week rehearsals will commence THIS WEDNESDAY, 1-2pm, IN THE HAYDON ALLEN TANK. As we are evicted at 2pm on the dot it is ESSENTIAL that you be ON TIME. Bring your own lunch (no garlic please) and nibble between notes.

Last Sunday there were 21 people at rehearsal. This is not nearly good enough! We have over 50 people who are officially members of SCUNA, and we need you ALL at EVERY rehearsal. If you are unable to come to the mid-week rehearsal make sure you are at the Sunday one.2

Our next concert will form part of the "Concerts on Campus" series.3 This means that the concert will be organized for us, and we will be paid a nice juicy sum for our services. So a high standard of performance is necessary, not only to justify our fee, but also to uphold SCUNA's reputation in the Canberra musical world. The concert is just over five weeks away; as from this Wednesday rolls will be kept.4 We will be doing lots of luvly new music (not to mention a Bach cantata No. 106). So singers, arise from the suburbs and join our happy throng.

MORE POST I.V. PARTIES:

For those of you who are devotees of the aforementioned, join the mass exodus from Canberra on the following dates:

Sydney is sure to be the most popular weekend outing for Scuna-ites. SUMS will be performing the Monteverdi Vespers on Friday 2nd and hope to see a lot of beautiful Scuna faces in the audience.5

DON'T FORGET: our own Post I.V. Party this Saturday night at __ Norman St., Deakin. Even if you didn't go to I.V? (oops), come along and sample some of the delights that you missed.

HEALTH REPORT: Have recovered from Typiste's Forefinger. Now have Port Throat.

Orriv Wah,

Sue

Notes

1Remember typewriters? Remember that portable typewriters didn't always have the full key set? "1" was commonly omitted, leaving the hapless typist to improvise. (I've replaced the rest; left this one in to show the perils we survived.)

2The plea to attend all rehearsals, and punctually at that, is an enduring theme. Here, "We need you ALL at EVERY rehearsal" looks as if it's weakened by the concession that people mightn't be able to attend mid-week rehearsals, but it was just a fact of life for those who were working off-campus.

3There's no information about this series on the web. The main difference I recall was that the concert was in Bruce Hall rather than University House. We had an orchestra for the Bach, so it must have been nice not to have to find the money to pay them from the SCUNA coffers.

4See also Gilbert, paragraph 1, "Rolls will be going around." The idea was that if you didn't attend enough rehearsals close to the concert, you wouldn't be allowed to sing. I never heard of anyone not being allowed to sing, though!

5Julian and I were in the audience. Any beautiful people who went, please let me know!

I suspect this was the post-IV party where David D____ accidentally spilt beer in the host's speakers, causing the host's mother to cry, "Nice people with no manners and no money at all!". I am pleased to be able to report, thanks to LyricsVault, that she was misquoting a 1940 song by Flanagan and Allen called Nice People. The refrain includes the words "nice people, with nice manners, but got no money at all".
